Matthew 4:1-2

The Spirit who descended at the Jordan now leads Jesus up into the wilderness for the very purpose of being tempted, the same Spirit directing him toward the test rather than merely allowing it. Forty days and forty nights of fasting deliberately answers Israel's forty years in that same wilderness and Moses' own forty days on the mountain without bread in Exodus 34:28, and the bench reads the number as Matthew's signal that the true Israel is now retracing the nation's steps to succeed where the nation failed. He was afterward an hungred states the plain physical fact the tempter aims at first.

Matthew 4:3-4

The tempter's first thrust doubts the very identity the Father just announced, if thou be the Son of God, and aims at the most pressing need a forty day fast creates. Jesus answers entirely from Scripture, Deuteronomy 8:3, the verse Moses spoke of the manna itself, that man lives by every word from God's mouth and not by bread alone; the bench notes he does not deny his power to make bread but refuses to use it apart from the Father's own timing. Each of the three answers in this chapter comes from Israel's own wilderness chapters in Deuteronomy, the true Son quoting the very book written to correct the first son's unbelief.

Matthew 4:5-7

The second temptation moves to the temple's pinnacle, likely the southeast corner overlooking the Kidron valley some four hundred feet below, and the devil now quotes Scripture himself, Psalm 91:11-12, twisting a promise of protection into a dare for presumption. He drops the psalm's own qualifying phrase, in all thy ways, meaning the ways of obedience, offering a shortcut to public proof of sonship instead of the Father's own timing. Jesus answers again from Deuteronomy 6:16, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, the verse Israel broke at Massah when she demanded God prove himself on her terms.

Matthew 4:8-10

The third temptation names no ordinary hill but an exceeding high mountain, the first of six mountain scenes this book returns to, ending at the mountain of the commission in 28:16. All the kingdoms of the world and their glory are offered for one act, fall down and worship me, the same worship the magi rightly gave in chapter 2 now demanded wrongly by one who has no right to receive it. Jesus' answer is his sharpest of the three, Get thee hence, Satan, paired with Deuteronomy 6:13's command to worship and serve God alone, ending the exchange rather than continuing to reason with it.

Matthew 4:11

The devil leaves and angels immediately come and minister to him, the same verb used of Elijah fed by an angel after his own wilderness collapse in 1 Kings 19:5-7, though Jesus stands where Elijah once lay. The bench reads the angelic ministry as physical relief after the long fast and as heaven's own confirmation that the true Son has passed the test the first Israel failed at every point, bread, testing God, and worship. The temptations recorded here are not the last the Gospels know; Luke notes the devil departed only for a season.

Matthew 4:12-16

John's imprisonment moves Jesus from Nazareth to Capernaum, and Matthew reads the resettlement itself as fulfillment, quoting Isaiah 9:1-2's promise to Zabulon and Nephthalim, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people which sat in darkness. This is Matthew's fourth fulfillment quotation, and the bench notes its aptness, since Galilee's mixed population and trade roads made it exactly the region Judea's religious center looked down on, the great light rising first where the darkness was thought deepest. Capernaum on the sea coast becomes the base for a ministry the rest of the book will spend twenty four chapters describing.

Matthew 4:17

From that time marks a formal beginning, and Jesus preaches the identical two words John preached, repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, the phrase's second sounding after 3:2, continuity between the forerunner's message and the King's own. The kingdom announced is near rather than yet fully come, present in the King's own person while awaiting its full arrival, a tension the parables of chapter 13 will explain at length. The same call that opened John's ministry now opens the ministry Jesus himself will carry all the way to the cross.

Matthew 4:18-20

casting a net into the sea: Simon called Peter and Andrew are found at their trade, casting a net, when the call comes, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, turning their own occupation toward a new catch. The bench notes straightway marks the calling in this passage, an abruptness the text does not soften with any negotiation or delay. Left nets mean a livelihood set down at a word, the first cost of following named in action before it is ever named in teaching.

Matthew 4:21-22

James and John are called next, found mending nets beside their father Zebedee, and the cost rises with the calling, since this pair leaves not only their trade but their father in the boat. The bench reads Zebedee's own boat and hired servants, which Mark 1:20 supplies, as evidence of a family business substantial enough that the sacrifice was real rather than merely convenient. Four men now follow, two pairs of brothers, the first four names of the twelve the book will finally list at 10:2-4.

Matthew 4:23-25

teaching in their synagogues: The chapter closes with a summary of a ministry now three stranded, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and disease, the same three tasks the mission charge of chapter 10 will hand to the twelve. Fame spreads the length of Syria, and the list of what is brought to him, torment, lunacy, palsy, possession, reads like a census of every affliction the ancient world knew no other cure for. Great multitudes follow from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and beyond Jordan, the widening circle of hearers that chapters 5 through 7 will now address directly on the mountain.
