Luke 3:1-2

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene anchors John's ministry with six named rulers at once, the most precisely dated opening in any Gospel, placing events at roughly AD 27 to 29 depending on how Tiberius's reign is counted. Lysanias of Abilene was once cited by skeptical scholars as a Lukan error, since the only known Lysanias of that region had died decades earlier, until an inscription from Abila itself turned up naming a later Lysanias as tetrarch in exactly this period, vindicating Luke's precision rather than exposing a mistake. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests names two men though the office belonged to one at a time; Annas had been deposed by Rome years before but retained enormous influence as the family patriarch, several of his sons and his son-in-law Caiaphas all holding the office in turn, so Luke's plural reflects the real power arrangement in Jerusalem rather than any confusion about the law.

Luke 3:3-4

He came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins describes a rite John performed as forerunner, not the church's later baptism into Christ, a washing that pictured turning from sin rather than union with a crucified and risen Lord not yet revealed. As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, quotes Isaiah 40:3, the verse all four Gospels apply to John, the forerunner's whole identity read straight out of a prophecy centuries older than the messenger it describes. The wilderness setting itself carries weight, the same terrain where Israel wandered forty years and where the prophets so often called the nation back to its first love, John preaching repentance in the very setting their history remembers.

Luke 3:5-6

Every valley shall be filled: Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth continues Isaiah's figure of road building ahead of a king's approach, the ancient custom of leveling and smoothing a route before royalty travelled it now applied to hearts prepared for the Lord's own coming. Matthew and Mark both quote Isaiah 40:3 but stop at make his paths straight; Luke alone carries the quotation on to and all flesh shall see the salvation of God, the brief's own pattern of Luke lengthening Old Testament citations to reach past Israel toward the Gentiles. The commentators read this extension as Luke announcing his own Gospel's scope in John's very introduction, salvation visible to all flesh before the Messiah has preached a single sermon.

Luke 3:7-9

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come strikes a harsher note than the setting might expect, John rebuking the very crowds coming to his baptism rather than only the religious leaders Matthew's parallel names specifically. Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham exposes a false security in bloodline alone, and the commentators note a likely wordplay behind the Hebrew, the words for stones and for children sharing nearly the same consonants, so John may be trading on a pun his hearers would have caught at once. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire names the judgment as already begun rather than merely threatened, the axe laid, not merely lifted, present-tense urgency running through the whole sermon.

Luke 3:10-11

The people asked him, saying, What shall we do then puts John's demand for fruit into concrete form, the first of three groups in this scene to ask the same practical question. He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise answers with ordinary charity rather than a new ritual, repentance proved in the sharing of coats and food rather than in ascetic display. The commentators note how unspectacular the instruction is, no call to the wilderness or to fasting, only the old prophetic concern for the poor that Isaiah 58 had already voiced, ethics rather than ceremony as the fruit John demands.

Luke 3:12-13

Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do brings the most despised class in Jewish society to John's baptism, tax farmers notorious for extorting more than Rome itself required and pocketing the excess. And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you strikingly does not tell them to abandon their profession, only to practice it honestly, repentance reforming a vocation rather than requiring its abandonment. The commentators note this instruction anticipates Zacchaeus at 19:1-10, another publican whose changed life will be measured in exactly this coin, honest dealing rather than a new career.

Luke 3:14

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do brings a third class before John, likely local troops in Herod's service rather than Roman legionaries, since this scene unfolds in a client kingdom rather than the province proper. He said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages names the specific abuses common to soldiers of that era, extortion by threat, false accusation for bribes, and plunder born of discontent with pay. The commentators note that John, like Peter and Paul after him, never demands that soldiers leave their calling, only that they practice it without the abuses their power made easy, repentance again reforming a station rather than abolishing it.

Luke 3:15-17

As the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not shows messianic hope running high enough that the very possibility crossed people's minds about the preacher himself. John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose deflects the question at once, using the lowest slave's task, unfastening sandals, as the measure of his own unworthiness before the one still to come. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire points forward to Pentecost's fire in Acts 2 for those who receive him, and the commentators read the same image as judgment fire for those who do not, one baptism with two outcomes depending on the hearer. Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable completes the harvest picture, the coming Messiah pictured as both gatherer and judge in the same act.

Luke 3:18-20

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people signals that Luke has been giving a representative sample rather than a complete transcript of John's preaching. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison closes John's public ministry with the reason for his arrest, Herod Antipas's unlawful marriage to his brother's wife openly rebuked by the preacher. The commentators note Luke places this notice of imprisonment here for narrative closure on John's whole story before returning to Jesus, even though the baptism described in the very next verse must have happened before Herod's arrest of John, an ordinary feature of ancient historical writing that groups a character's story together rather than insisting on strict chronological sequence throughout.

Luke 3:21-22

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened places Jesus among the crowds coming for John's baptism, and Luke alone notes that he was praying at the moment heaven opened, the prayer thread that will mark every major turning point in this Gospel beginning here. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him gives the moment a visible, tangible sign, Luke's own physician's precision noting bodily shape rather than leaving the descent merely figurative. A voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased combines Psalm 2:7's royal declaration with Isaiah 42:1's servant language, and the three persons of the Godhead all stand present in one scene, the Son praying in the water, the Spirit descending visibly, and the Father speaking from heaven.

Luke 3:23

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli opens a genealogy that differs from Matthew's at nearly every generation after David, and the qualifier as was supposed signals Luke's own awareness that legal and biological descent are not quite the same thing here. Matthew names Joseph's father as Jacob at Matthew 1:16, while Luke names Heli, and the commentators hold two classic solutions without forcing a verdict, either a levirate marriage in which Jacob and Heli were brothers by the same mother and one died childless so the other's son Joseph counted legally as both men's heir, or Luke tracing Mary's own line through her father Heli, with Joseph recorded as his son-in-law in the ordinary Jewish way of counting a son-in-law as a son. Thirty was also the age the law set for a Levite entering the fullness of his service at the tabernacle in Numbers 4:3, and though Jesus was no Levite the commentators note the age as a fitting one for a ministry now publicly beginning.

Luke 3:24-27

the son of Matthat: Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph carries the line back through names entirely absent from Matthew's record, further evidence for the commentators that two distinct lines are being traced rather than one Gospel simply copying the other with errors. The line continues through Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, and Nagge before reaching Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, and Salathiel, and here the two Gospels briefly touch, both naming Salathiel and Zorobabel among the ancestors, though even the fathers and sons surrounding that shared pair differ between Matthew and Luke. The bench reads this brief convergence as evidence that both genealogies draw on real, careful records rather than invention, two family lines from the exile's return crossing paths at one generation before diverging again.

Luke 3:28-31

the son of Melchi: Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er continues the ascent through otherwise unknown figures, ordinary links in a chain neither Gospel had any reason to invent. The line passes through Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, and a second Levi before reaching Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, and Eliakim, and then through Melea, Menan, Mattatha, and Nathan to David himself, Luke's line reaching the king through Nathan rather than through Solomon, the son Matthew's genealogy follows. The commentators weigh why this matters theologically, since Jeremiah 22:30 pronounces that none of Jeconiah's line descending from Solomon would ever again sit successfully on David's throne, and one long-held solution reads Matthew's line as Joseph's own legal, royal descent through Solomon, carrying the throne right to Jesus by adoption, while Luke's line through Nathan traces an actual blood descent from David that never passes under Jeconiah's curse at all.

Luke 3:32-34

the son of Jesse: Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson names the same men Matthew's genealogy names at this point, Boaz and his line out of the book of Ruth, though Luke, unlike Matthew, mentions none of the four women Matthew's list includes by name, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba, each Gospel shaping its own record for its own emphasis without either being incomplete. The line continues through Aminadab, Aram, Esrom, Phares, and Juda, the patriarch Judah himself, before reaching Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham, the same three fathers every Jewish reader would expect. Where Matthew's genealogy stops at Abraham, satisfied to root Jesus in Israel's own father, Luke presses on through Thara and Nachor, already signaling the wider reach his genealogy is built to make.

Luke 3:35-38

Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala carries the line through the names Genesis 11 already gave the world after the flood, Serug, Reu, Peleg, Eber, and Shelah in their Hebrew forms. The line reaches Cainan, Arphaxad, Sem, Noe, and Lamech before Mathusala, Enoch, Jared, Maleleel, and a second Cainan lead to Enos, Seth, and Adam; the commentators note honestly that this Cainan between Arphaxad and Sala appears in the Greek Septuagint's genealogy but not in the Hebrew Masoretic text of Genesis 11, and that a number of early manuscripts of Luke itself omit the name, a genuine textual question named rather than smoothed over. Which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God closes the whole genealogy at humanity's own first father, and unlike Matthew, who stops the ancestry at Abraham to root Jesus firmly in Israel, Luke carries it all the way to Adam and beyond him to God, the universal frame this Gentile physician's Gospel has been building since its own preface, Christ's kinship reaching every child of Adam, not Israel alone.
