John7chapter 7

John 7:1

After these things marks a gap of several months since chapter 6, and John summarizes the whole period in a single sentence, Jesus walking in Galilee because he would not walk in Jewry, since the Jews, meaning here the Judean leadership rather than the people at large, sought to kill him. The plain reason given for his movements is danger rather than strategy alone, a Messiah whose hour is not yet come deliberately staying out of reach of men who had already decided his fate. The verse sets the tension the whole chapter will play out, a feast in Jerusalem drawing him toward the very city that wants him dead.

John 7:2-3

The Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand, Sukkot, the autumn festival of booths commemorating the wilderness wandering and celebrated with palm and willow branches, water poured out at the altar, and great lamps lit in the temple court, rites this chapter's own sayings will answer directly. His brethren, meaning Jesus' own half brothers born to Mary and Joseph, urge him to depart to Judea so his disciples there may see the works he does, a suggestion that sounds like family loyalty but carries an edge the next verse names outright. The bench reads their urging as pressure toward public spectacle rather than genuine faith in who he was.

John 7:4-5

No man that doeth any thing in secret seeks to be known openly, the brothers argue, so if thou do these things, shew thyself to the world, a demand that fame should follow every genuine work rather than a life lived, as Jesus' had been, mostly hidden in Galilee. John states their real condition without softening it, for neither did his brethren believe in him, family proximity to Jesus for thirty years having produced familiarity rather than faith. The bench notes the same men later become believers after the resurrection, James among them writing an epistle, so unbelief here is not their final word.

John 7:6-7

My time is not yet come answers their demand for a schedule of self-display with the same hour language that has run through this Gospel since chapter 2, a timetable known only to the Father and not subject to family pressure. Your time is alway ready draws the contrast plainly, an ordinary man risks nothing by going up publicly because the world has no quarrel with him. The world cannot hate you names the real difference, but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil, Jesus' own witness against sin being the very thing that provokes the world's hostility.

John 7:8-9

Go ye up unto this feast releases the brothers to their own plan while Jesus withholds himself, I go not up yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come, a statement of timing rather than a flat refusal, since the very next verse shows him going after all. The bench reads yet and full as the hinge words, Jesus declining their proposed manner and moment of appearing rather than the feast itself. He abode still in Galilee, unmoved by pressure that would have suited his family's sense of what a rising teacher ought to do.

John 7:10

When his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret, the exact opposite of the public spectacle they had urged on him in verse 4. The bench reads the change of manner as consistent rather than contradictory, Jesus keeping the feast as every observant Israelite was commanded while refusing to turn his arrival into the kind of demonstration his brothers wanted. His own timing, quiet and unannounced, will still bring him to the very center of controversy by the middle of the feast.

John 7:11-13

The Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he, the Judean leadership already watching for him among the pilgrim crowds. Much murmuring divides the ordinary people, some calling him a good man, others saying he deceiveth the people, the same split of opinion that will run through the whole chapter. Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews shows how far intimidation had already reached, honest opinion silenced in public by the authorities' known hostility toward him.

John 7:14-15

About the midst of the feast, roughly its fourth day of eight, Jesus went up into the temple and taught, ending the secrecy of his arrival with a public appearance in the most visible place available. The Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned, the astonishment of trained scribes at a teacher with no rabbinic credential yet teaching with evident authority. The bench notes the same wonder met him in Nazareth's synagogue, learning without a school being one more sign this Gospel treats as pointing beyond a merely human explanation.

John 7:16-18

My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me answers their question about his learning directly, the content of his teaching traced to its true source rather than to any human school. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine offers a test open to anyone, obedience as the path to recognizing truth rather than credentials as the gate to teaching it. He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory closes the section with a principle the bench applies both ways, a self-seeking teacher exposed by his own motive, while Jesus, seeking the glory of him that sent him, is shown thereby to be true and free of unrighteousness.

John 7:19-20

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law turns the argument suddenly toward the very charge behind their hostility, hypocrisy exposed before the accusation is even named. Why go ye about to kill me brings into open daylight what chapter 5 already recorded as their settled intention, a plot the crowd itself may not fully know about. Thou hast a devil, who goeth about to kill thee answers with either genuine ignorance from pilgrims unaware of the leadership's plans or a deliberate deflection meant to make Jesus sound paranoid, the bench allowing for either reading of the crowd's response.

John 7:21-22

I have done one work, and ye all marvel refers back to the Bethesda healing of chapter 5, still the scandal that had set the leadership against him months later. Jesus meets their objection with their own law, Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers, tracing the rite past Moses to Abraham's own covenant in Genesis 17, and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man, a labor the rabbis themselves permitted on the seventh day for the sake of the law's own command. The argument sets their accepted practice directly beside his healing before drawing the comparison out in the next two verses.

John 7:23-24

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken states the rabbinic principle in its own terms, one small part of the body treated on the sabbath so the whole law of circumcision is not violated by delay. Are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day presses the argument from lesser to greater, a rite touching one limb permitted while healing an entire body is condemned, an inconsistency the bench reads as a genuine rabbinic style of reasoning turned back on its own users. Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment closes the exchange with a plain call to weigh the substance of an act rather than merely its outward form.

John 7:25-27

Some of them of Jerusalem, residents closer to the leadership's own plans than the pilgrim crowds, ask the very question that exposes the tension in the scene, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill, and yet he speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto him, the authorities' silence prompting an open question, do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ. Their own answer to their question rests on a popular tradition rather than Scripture, that when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is, a belief the bench traces to a strand of expectation that the Messiah's origin would be hidden until his sudden appearing. We know this man whence he is treats his known Nazareth upbringing as disproof, an objection the following verses answer.

John 7:28-29

Jesus cried in the temple, meeting their objection directly, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am, granting their knowledge of his earthly origin in Nazareth while insisting there is more to know still. I am not come of myself corrects the deeper misunderstanding, his true origin lying with the one that sent me, who is true, whom ye know not, their claim to know God undercut by their failure to recognize the one he sent. But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me states again the unique relation this Gospel has argued from its opening verses, a claim the crowd's simple Nazareth objection was never equipped to answer.

John 7:30-31

They sought to take him at this open claim, but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come, the same hour language of verses 6 and 8 now shown to govern not only Jesus' own choices but the actions of men set against him, a restraint the bench reads as divine protection rather than mere accident. Many of the people believed on him, though, weighing his works against the leadership's hostility, when Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done. The question assumes an answer even as it is asked, their own sense that no rival credential could exceed what they had already witnessed.

John 7:32-34

The Pharisees heard the people's murmuring in his favor, and the Pharisees and the chief priests, two groups often at odds with each other, join together and sent officers to take him, opposition to Jesus proving able to unite parties that otherwise disagreed. Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me answers the arrest attempt with a statement of his own timetable rather than fear, his departure framed as a return rather than a defeat. Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me, and where I am, thither ye cannot come speaks of a separation the crowd cannot yet grasp, words that will echo again for the disciples in the upper room with a very different meaning attached.

John 7:35-36

The Jews among themselves guess at his meaning, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him, and land on a possibility offered half in mockery, will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles, naming the diaspora communities scattered through the Greek-speaking world. The bench reads deep irony here that the speakers cannot see, since the gospel will in fact go to the Gentiles, though not by Jesus' own physical travel there but through the apostles he leaves behind. What manner of saying is this repeats their bafflement, the crowd circling his words without landing on their true sense.

John 7:37-38

The last day, that great day of the feast was Tabernacles' eighth day, when the daily rite of drawing water from Siloam and pouring it out at the altar, kept for the seven days before, was not repeated, a deliberate silence the crowd would have felt keenly. Into that very silence Jesus stood and cried, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink, offering himself as the reality the water rite had pictured all along. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water widens the promise from mere personal satisfaction to an overflow reaching others, a saying John is about to explain in the next verse.

John 7:39

John supplies his own inspired commentary on the saying just given, this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive, removing any doubt about what the living water pictures. For the Holy Ghost was not yet given explains why the crowd could not yet grasp the full sense, the gift awaiting a specific hour still future to this scene. Because that Jesus was not yet glorified ties the Spirit's coming directly to the cross and resurrection, this Gospel's own theology of glory naming the cross itself as the hour of the Son's exaltation rather than mere humiliation.

John 7:40-41

Many of the people, hearing the water saying, land on the same title chapter 6 had already reached for after the feeding of the five thousand, Of a truth this is the Prophet, Moses' promised successor of Deuteronomy 18. Others said, This is the Christ, a bolder claim still, while some object on a point of simple geography, Shall Christ come out of Galilee, since the crowd assumes, correctly as it turns out, that Bethlehem rather than Nazareth is the promised birthplace. The chapter records the debate without settling it in the mouths of the crowd, the reader alone given, through Matthew's and Luke's own birth narratives, the information the crowd here lacks.

John 7:42-44

Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem cites Micah 5:2 correctly, and the crowd's objection is sound as far as it goes, unaware that Jesus was in fact born in Bethlehem before his family settled in Nazareth. So there was a division among the people because of him, the same split running through every scene of this chapter, and some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on him, the restraint of verse 30 holding once again. The bench notes the irony that correct information, wrongly applied for want of the full facts, keeps a crowd from the very conclusion the facts would actually support.

John 7:45-46

The officers sent in verse 32 return empty-handed, and the chief priests and Pharisees demand an explanation, Why have ye not brought him, expecting obedience from men whose job was simply to arrest a suspect. The officers answered, Never man spake like this man, a confession from hostile witnesses who had gone to make an arrest and instead stood listening. The bench treats their unguarded honesty as its own kind of testimony, trained temple police disarmed by words rather than by force.

John 7:47-49

Are ye also deceived answers the officers' honest report with contempt rather than curiosity, the Pharisees assuming any impression made by Jesus must be delusion rather than evidence worth weighing. Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him treats social and religious rank as the true measure of truth, an argument from status rather than substance. But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed shows the same contempt turned on the ordinary crowd, a phrase the bench reads as revealing more about the speakers' pride than about the people they scorn.

John 7:50-51

Nicodemus, identified again as he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them, speaks up from inside the very council scorning the crowd, his earlier nighttime visit of chapter 3 evidently still shaping his conscience even without an open confession of faith. Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth appeals to a basic principle of Jewish jurisprudence, a fair hearing owed to any man before condemnation. The bench reads Nicodemus here as a man risking real standing among his peers for the sake of simple due process, a small but costly act of integrity.

John 7:52

Art thou also of Galilee turns Nicodemus's fair procedural question into a suspicion about his loyalty, the council assuming sympathy for Jesus must mean shared Galilean origin or shared inferiority. Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet is the claim the crowd's own division in verse 41 already complicated, since Jonah came from Gath-hepher in Galilee and the council's sweeping statement is not, in fact, strictly accurate. The bench notes the irony that trained interpreters of the law overstate the very Scriptures they claim to guard, contempt for Galilee outrunning careful reading.

John 7:53

Every man went unto his own house closes the council's session with nothing decided, the whole chapter's argument dissolving into an ordinary evening. The verse also opens the passage traditionally printed as 7:53 through 8:11, the account of the woman taken in adultery, which is absent from the earliest Greek manuscripts and appears in different places in the few later copies that include it at all. The church has long received the story as authentic tradition of the Lord even so, and this site presents it at full strength alongside the manuscript evidence rather than pronouncing a verdict on its place in the text.
