Job's final oath of innocence, sworn clause by clause: the ancient world's fullest ethic of the heart. 'I made a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a virgin?' (31:1). Let me be weighed in an even balance. He calls down curses on himself if he has walked with falsehood, despised the cause of his servant ('did not he that made me in the womb make him?') withheld the poor from their desire, made gold his hope, secretly kissed his hand to the sun, or eaten his land's fruit without wages paid. Sign the indictment, he demands, and he will wear it as a crown. 'The words of Job are ended.'
