Jeremiah 47:1-2

The heading dates the oracle to a Pharaoh's strike against Gaza, an event distinct from Nebuchadnezzar's later campaign against the Philistine coast and one the commentators associate variously with Necho or Hophra, named honestly as uncertain. Verse 2 pictures the invader as waters rising out of the north into an overflowing flood, the same flood image Egypt used of herself in 46:7-8 now turned into a literal army sweeping over the land and everyone in it.

Jeremiah 47:3-4

The terror is measured in the cruelest possible unit, fathers who will not turn back to help their own children because their hands have gone weak with fear, the invasion's speed and scale overriding even a parent's instinct. Verse 4 ties the coming judgment to the Philistines' origin from Caphtor, the same derivation Amos 9:7 and Deuteronomy 2:23 give them, and cuts off their old allies Tyre and Sidon in the same stroke, leaving the Philistine cities with no one left to call on.

Jeremiah 47:5-7

Baldness and self-cutting were pagan mourning rites the law forbade to Israel (Leviticus 19:28, Deuteronomy 14:1), and the text records Gaza and Ashkelon practicing them without commanding or approving the practice itself. The closing address turns to the sword of the Lord directly, commanded to rest and be still, yet unable, because the charge against Ashkelon and the sea shore has been given by the Lord himself and there he has appointed it. The oracle ends by making Philistia's judgment a matter of direct appointment rather than impersonal chance or mere Babylonian ambition.
