Isaiah 62:1-2

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace: The prophet speaks in the first person now, and the Lord's resolve not to rest until Jerusalem's righteousness shines like the dawn opens the chapter. The nations and their kings will see what Jerusalem's own sons had doubted, and the city receives a name not chosen by herself but named by the mouth of the Lord, the naming pattern that runs through the whole chapter. Henry reads the passage as intercession turned into promise, the same voice that pled in earlier chapters now assured of the outcome it sought. Barnes notes the emphatic doubling, I will not hold my peace, I will not rest, language borrowed from a watchman who will not desert his post.

Isaiah 62:3-5

Thou shalt also be a crown of glory: Zion becomes an ornament held in God's own hand, a crown and a royal diadem carried by the Lord rather than by any human king. The two withdrawn names, Forsaken and Desolate, are replaced by two given names, Hephzibah meaning my delight is in her, and Beulah meaning married, so the land itself is pictured as a bride the Lord delights in and takes for his own. Gill traces the naming as the reversal of the exile's shame, the same land once called deserted now called by a bridegroom's word. The marriage figure closes with the ordinary comparison of a young man and his bride, God's rejoicing over Zion measured against the most joyful human bond the writers knew.

Isaiah 62:6-7

I have set watchmen upon thy walls: The Lord appoints watchmen on Jerusalem's walls whose task is not defense but intercession, praying without stopping day or night until the city he named becomes what he named it. The watchmen are told to give him no rest, the same resolve voiced of the Lord himself in verse 1, so the prophet turns his own vow into a charge laid on a praying remnant. Barnes reads the pattern as the ordinary shape of promised mercy in Isaiah, God binding himself to answer prayer he has already purposed to grant. Delitzsch notes the address widening from the prophet's single voice to a company set apart for the single work of holding God to his word.

Isaiah 62:8-9

The Lord hath sworn by his right hand: The promise is sealed by oath, the Lord swearing by his right hand and the arm of his strength that the corn once carried off by invaders will feed the people who grew it. The reversal answers the covenant curse of a foreign hand eating another man's harvest, and here the eaters give thanks in the courts of the temple rather than filling a stranger's granary. Henry sets the oath beside the older curses of the law, the same right hand that swore the curse now swearing the mercy that undoes it. Gill reads the courts of my holiness as the temple courts, worship and harvest joined in one plain scene of gratitude.

Isaiah 62:10-11

Go through, go through the gates: The chapter turns outward with a string of short commands, go through the gates, prepare the way, cast up the highway, gather out the stones, the same building language the earlier voice used at 40:3 for the road home from exile. The standard lifted for the people signals a return in full public view, a marked road rather than a secret departure. Verse 11 answers with the announcement itself, carried to the end of the world, that Zion's salvation comes, her reward with her and her work before her. Delitzsch reads the highway as figurative, obstacles to restoration cleared rather than literal stones, while Barnes keeps the plain sense of an actual road standing beside it.

Isaiah 62:12

The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord: The chapter ends with a cluster of new names replacing the old reproach: the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord, and for the city itself, Sought out, a city not forsaken, directly reversing the Forsaken of verse 4. The naming pattern that opened the chapter closes it, God's own mouth doing what human report could not, remaking Jerusalem's reputation by remaking what she is called. Gill reads the redeemed of the Lord as looking past the return from Babylon toward a fuller redemption the return only pictured. Wesley reads Sought out as the deliberate opposite of a city left to be forgotten, God going after Zion rather than waiting for her to come home.
