A song for the beloved concerning his vineyard opens the chapter: planted on a fruitful hill, digged, cleared of stones, given a tower and winepress, yet it yields wild grapes, so its hedge is removed and it is laid waste. Verse 7 names the vineyard as the house of Israel and Judah: Jehovah looked for justice (mishpat) but found oppression (mispach), for righteousness (tsedaqah) but heard a cry (tse'aqah). Six woes follow: against land-grabbers who join house to house, drunkards who ignore Jehovah's work, those who drag sin with cart ropes, those who call evil good and good evil, the wise in their own eyes, and heroes at drinking wine who take bribes. Sheol enlarges itself; Jehovah's anger is not turned away, and he whistles for a distant nation whose army comes swiftly, roaring like lions, bringing darkness and distress.
