Isaiah 22:1-2

The burden of the valley of vision: The title itself is a paradox the older writers linger over: Jerusalem, set among hills and never called a valley elsewhere, is a valley of vision because prophecy was given there, and yet the city that received revelation is the city under judgment. The question asked is a taunt, what aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops, the rooftop crowds Barnes and Delitzsch read as citizens climbing to watch the enemy or to celebrate too soon, not to pray. Her slain are not the ordinary casualties of a fought battle, they died of famine and terror inside a besieged city, which the commentators tie to the Assyrian crisis under Hezekiah rather than to open war. A joyous city becomes a byword for judgment in the same breath it is named joyous.

Isaiah 22:3-4

All thy rulers are fled together: The rulers who should have led the defense are gone before the city falls, bound together with the very archers sent to bind others, and even those who fled the farthest are taken. Isaiah's own response breaks into the oracle in the first person, look away from me, I will weep bitterly, a prophet refusing the comfort his hearers might offer because the grief is not performance but real sorrow for his own people. Henry and Gill both read the shift to first person as the mark of a true prophet, one who never delivers judgment on his nation without feeling its weight himself. The spoiling of the daughter of my people names Jerusalem as kin, not merely as a subject of the oracle.

Isaiah 22:5-8

For it is a day of trouble: The valley of vision becomes a valley of trouble and treading down, walls broken and the mountains themselves summoned to hear the crying, language the bench reads against the Assyrian siege of Sennacherib's day. Elam supplies archers and chariots and Kir uncovers the shield, foreign troops named specifically enough that Barnes and Delitzsch track them as auxiliaries in the Assyrian army rather than Judah's own forces. Judah's covering is stripped away, and in that day the people look not to the Lord but to the armour stored in the house of the forest, Solomon's old armory kept for emergencies. The city arms itself with everything but prayer.

Isaiah 22:9-11

Ye have seen also the breaches: The people see the breaches in the wall of the city of David and answer with engineering rather than repentance, gathering the waters of the lower pool, numbering houses only to tear them down for stone to fortify the wall, and digging a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool. The historical detail matches the frantic defensive works of Hezekiah's reign, the pool and conduit work 2 Kings 20:20 and 2 Chronicles 32 record him undertaking against this same Assyrian threat. Isaiah's charge is not that the labor was wrong but that it stopped short, ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago, the God who shaped the very hills and pools they were reinforcing. Every wall built without looking to its maker is, in the end, one more wall that will not hold.

Isaiah 22:12-14

And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call: God calls the city to weeping, mourning, baldness and sackcloth, the mourning rites of genuine repentance, and the city answers with the opposite: joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. The feast's own slogan, let us eat and drink, for to morrow we shall die, is the fatalism of a people who have decided judgment is certain and pleasure is all that is left, and Paul draws the identical line at 1 Corinthians 15:32 to describe life with no resurrection to answer to. The verdict on the feast is final in this life, surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, a sentence the older writers read as covering that generation rather than every individual in it. A city that will not weep when called is left to feast on borrowed time.

Isaiah 22:15-19

Go, get thee unto this treasurer: Shebna held the highest civil office under the king, steward over the house, and used the position to carve himself a monument, a sepulchre hewn high in the rock like the tombs of greater men, which Isaiah reads as pride reaching for a permanence not given the office. The judgment matches the offense: the man who built himself a resting place will not rest there, the Lord will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee, tossed like a ball into a large country to die away from the tomb he cut. Barnes and Gill both note that 2 Kings 18 shows a Shebna still active at the time of Sennacherib's embassy, but now only a scribe under Eliakim, which they read as this very demotion already underway. The office outlives the man who tried to make it his monument.

Isaiah 22:20-23

I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: Eliakim receives what Shebna lost, robe and girdle and government, and is called a father to Jerusalem and Judah, language of paternal care rather than mere administration. The key of the house of David laid on his shoulder makes him the single gatekeeper of royal access, so he shall open, and none shall shut, and he shall shut, and none shall open, an absolute authority the older writers from the fathers onward read as reaching past Eliakim toward Christ. Revelation 3:7 takes the identical title, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and no man shutteth, and applies it to the risen Christ writing to Philadelphia, verified as this chapter's own vocabulary carried forward. Fastened as a nail in a sure place, Eliakim becomes for a time the glorious throne of his father's house, the type carrying weight the man himself could not permanently bear.

Isaiah 22:24-25

And they shall hang upon him all the glory: Eliakim's family and dependents are pictured as vessels hung on his peg, from the great vessels of cups down to the small vessels of flagons, every relative's fortune now hanging from one man's position. The picture turns on itself in the very next verse, the nail that is fastened in the sure place shall be removed, and be cut down, and fall, and everything hung upon it falls with it, a warning the older commentators apply to any office loaded with more dependents than one mortal steward can bear. Even Eliakim's line, faithful as it was, could not carry that weight forever, which is precisely why the greater key of Revelation 3:7 belongs to one who never falls. Gill and Henry both read the fallen nail as the chapter's own answer to the sepulchre Shebna tried to cut for himself, no human office is the sure place a soul can finally rest in.
