2 Timothy 2:1-2

be strong in the grace: Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus opens with the therefore that ties strength to everything chapter 1 has laid down, Paul's own suffering and the deposit both kept and entrusted. Verse 2 gives the relay of the word its classic statement, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also, four generations in one sentence, Paul to Timothy to faithful men to those they will teach, the letter's own plan for how the deposit outlives its first two custodians. The faithful men required are marked by trustworthiness and teaching ability together, not one without the other.

2 Timothy 2:3-4

The soldier image opens three figures Paul draws from ordinary life, soldier, athlete, and farmer, each teaching Timothy something about ministry under Paul's own imprisonment. A soldier's undivided attention, not entangling himself with the affairs of this life, aims to please the one who enlisted him, and the suffering thread's second beat runs through the figure, hardness endured as a soldier's ordinary condition rather than a sign of failure. The picture answers the temptation of verse 1, strength drawn from grace looks in practice like a soldier's single focus.

2 Timothy 2:5-6

The athlete is crowned only for competing lawfully, within the rules of the contest, a warning against shortcuts that reappears at 4:8's crown of righteousness given for a race finished properly, not merely finished. The farmer completes the trio in verse 6, the husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits, reward following labor as its natural order rather than an arbitrary bonus. Three ordinary callings, soldier, athlete, and farmer, together picture a ministry marked by focus, disciplined effort, and patient labor before harvest.

2 Timothy 2:7

Paul does not explain the three figures further but hands the work of application to Timothy himself, consider what I say, trusting him to draw the lesson from soldier, athlete, and farmer alike. The promise attached, the Lord give thee understanding in all things, makes plain that spiritual insight into Scripture and ministry is itself a gift sought from God rather than a product of native cleverness. The verse functions as a hinge, closing the three images and opening onto the gospel summary that follows.

2 Timothy 2:8-9

raised from the dead: Paul reduces the gospel to its two irreducible facts, of the seed of David and raised from the dead, the promised King's human descent and his bodily resurrection held together as my gospel, the message Paul has staked his life on. Verse 9 states the suffering thread's central paradox, I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds, but the word of God is not bound, Paul's body chained while the message he carries keeps traveling free of the prison that holds him. The contrast supplies the letter's own answer to a discouraged reader, imprisonment limits the messenger, never the message.

2 Timothy 2:10

The scope widens from Paul's own suffering to its purpose, I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory, his imprisonment serving others' salvation rather than merely being borne. The elect here names those God will yet call through the word Paul's chains cannot silence, the same word declared unbound in the verse before. Endurance is framed as purposeful investment made on behalf of others, not passive suffering absorbed alone.

2 Timothy 2:11-13

The faithful saying runs four balanced lines: if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him, our present dying with Christ answered by life; if we suffer, we shall also reign with him, the suffering thread meeting the hope of reigning with Christ; if we deny him, he also will deny us, the Lord's own words at Matthew 10:33 set into creed form as a plain warning against denial; though our faith should fail, yet he abideth faithful, for he cannot deny himself. The fourth line's meaning is read two ways across the church, God's faithfulness to His own warnings against those who fall away, or His faithfulness to preserve believers despite weak and faltering faith, and both readings are held by serious voices, the text itself not settling which the phrase intends.

2 Timothy 2:14

Timothy is to keep believers in remembrance of the gospel summarized in the verses just given, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words, disputes over terminology rather than substance, contests Paul says accomplish nothing but harm. To no profit and to the subverting of the hearers name both the emptiness of such quarrels and their real damage, listeners overturned rather than built up. The charge assumes real doctrine matters enormously while verbal squabbling over it does not matter at all.

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God sets the standard as God's approval rather than the hearers' applause, and the verse gives the letter's fourth and final unashamed beat, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. Rightly dividing is literally cutting a straight line, a road builder's or a plowman's word applied here to handling Scripture without twisting it toward a private end. The verse stands as the positive charge behind the warning against word-battles just given, a workman cuts straight where the wranglers merely cut.

2 Timothy 2:16-18

Profane and vain babblings are to be shunned outright rather than debated, because Paul says plainly they increase unto more ungodliness, their word spreading as doth a canker, a medical term for gangrene eating living tissue, one of the sharpest images in the Pastorals for false teaching's effect on a church body. Hymenaeus and Philetus are named as carriers of one such teaching, that the resurrection is past already, an over-realized eschatology collapsing the future bodily hope into a merely spiritual experience already complete. The result named is real and personal, they overthrow the faith of some, a caution the site's own premillennial, futurist reading of the last things takes seriously.

2 Timothy 2:19

Against Hymenaeus and Philetus, individual defections do not shake what God has built, the foundation of God standeth sure, carrying a double seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his, God's own certain knowledge of His people, and let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity, the corresponding call to holiness that answers profession with life. The two halves of the seal hold together God's sovereign knowledge and the believer's responsibility to depart from evil, neither canceling the other. The verse answers alarm at visible apostasy with a settled confidence that God's own foundation does not move.

2 Timothy 2:20-21

The great-house figure pictures a household with vessels of differing material and differing use, gold and silver alongside wood and earth, some set to honour and some to dishonour, an image drawn at the scope the text itself gives it, the visible church containing a mixture the Hymenaeus and Philetus episode has just illustrated. Verse 21 turns the figure into an exhortation, if a man therefore purge himself from these, moving from a fixed vessel to one that can choose its own cleansing, becoming sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. The image is read for what it says about present usefulness in the household of faith, not pressed beyond its own terms into a fuller doctrine of election.

2 Timothy 2:22

The command pairs flight and pursuit in one verse, flee youthful lusts while following righteousness, faith, charity, and peace, a young minister's temptations answered not by willpower alone but by chasing something better in their place. The pursuit is not solitary, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart, fellowship named as part of the remedy alongside personal discipline. The verse closes the vessel imagery with a practical charge, purging from dishonour looks like fleeing one set of things and following another.

2 Timothy 2:23-26

Paul returns to the danger named at verse 14, foolish and unlearned questions bred nothing but strife and are to be avoided rather than engaged. The servant of the Lord answers quarrel with a different temperament altogether, not striving, but gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, correction offered without anger even toward active opponents. The goal named is restoration, not victory, if God peradventure will give them repentance, that opponents may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, the chapter's closing image casting false teaching itself as captivity from which repentance is the only real escape.
