1 Corinthians1chapter 1

1 Corinthians 1:1-3

Paul, called to be an apostle: Paul opens by anchoring his apostleship not in the Corinthians' opinion of him but in the will of God, joining Sosthenes, likely the synagogue ruler beaten at Corinth in Acts 18:17, now a brother in the church he once opposed. The greeting reaches beyond one congregation, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, a scope the divided Corinthians badly needed to hear before the rebuke began. Grace and peace, Paul's standard salutation, names the gift before it names the problem, God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ paired as one source of both.

1 Corinthians 1:4-9

Paul thanks God first, before a single fault is named, for the grace given the Corinthians in Christ Jesus, and he grounds his thanksgiving in gifts already visible among them, enriched in all utterance and in all knowledge, so that they come behind in no gift while they wait for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The waiting is the frame the whole letter works inside, since chapters twelve through fourteen will spend three chapters on those same gifts and their right use, and this early thanksgiving shows the gifts were never the problem. God's faithfulness, not the church's maturity, is the ground of verse nine, the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord a calling God himself will keep to its blameless end.

1 Corinthians 1:10-12

Paul's appeal comes by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they speak the same thing and suffer no divisions, perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgment, the standard against which the report from Chloe's household is measured. The contentions surface as four slogans, I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and I of Christ, and the commentators note that even the last slogan, sound as it looks, was a party badge the moment it set itself against the other three. The bench reads the division as personality allegiance rather than doctrinal heresy at this stage, since all four names belong to the same gospel, which is exactly what makes the sin harder to see and Paul's rebuke necessary.

1 Corinthians 1:13

Is Christ divided?: Three questions in a row expose the absurdity of party spirit: is Christ divided, was Paul crucified for you, were ye baptized in the name of Paul. Each question answers itself, since Christ cannot be parceled into factions, Paul was not the one nailed to the cross, and no one had been baptized into an apostle's name rather than the Lord's. The verse becomes the letter's own test for any disciple who forgets whose name he was baptized in.

1 Corinthians 1:14-16

Paul is glad, in hindsight, that he personally baptized so few at Corinth, only Crispus and Gaius and the household of Stephanas, lest any should say he had baptized in his own name and fed the very factionalism he is correcting. Verse sixteen's afterthought, besides, I know not whether I baptized any other, shows an apostle unconcerned to keep a tally of converts credited to himself. The bench reads the whole passage as Paul defusing, by his own example, the cult of personality his converts had built around baptizing ministers.

1 Corinthians 1:17

Paul draws the line between his commission and his method: Christ sent him not to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. The phrase sets up the argument that follows through chapter two, that clever rhetoric can empty the cross of its own power by making the messenger, not the message crucified, the thing an audience admires. Wisdom of words here is not knowledge condemned but a manner of speech, the polished sophistry Corinth's own culture prized above substance.

1 Corinthians 1:18

The cross divides its hearers into two camps by their response rather than by their intelligence: to them that perish it is foolishness, and unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Paul states here, at the head of the wisdom thread that runs through chapter two, the pattern the rest of the argument will only illustrate, that the gospel's saving power was never contingent on its sounding wise to the world. Spurgeon preached this verse as the church's abiding confidence, that a plain gospel needs no rhetorical dress to do its saving work.

1 Corinthians 1:19

Paul anchors the argument in Isaiah 29:14, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent, a judgment first spoken against Judah's political cleverness and now applied to Corinth's love of rhetorical polish. The citation opens the it-is-written ledger that runs through chapters one through three and again through the resurrection chapter, Paul reaching for Scripture rather than argument alone at each turn. The bench notes the prophetic force is unchanged across both settings, human cunning cannot outmaneuver God's own purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:20-21

Where is the wise?: Three questions echo Isaiah's own taunt against pagan wisdom, where is the wise, where is the scribe, where is the disputer of this world, each title naming a class Corinth still admired, the Greek sage, the Jewish scholar, the professional debater. Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world answers all three at once, and verse twenty-one explains why, the world by its own wisdom never arrived at the knowledge of God, so it pleased God to save through what that same wisdom calls foolish, the preaching of the cross. The bench reads the pairing as Paul's diagnosis of both Jew and Greek learning, neither one sufficient on its own terms to reach its object.

1 Corinthians 1:22-24

Paul names the two demands his gospel refuses to meet on their own terms, the Jews require a sign and the Greeks seek after wisdom, and the church preaches Christ crucified instead, a stumblingblock to the first and foolishness to the second. Verse twenty-four turns the same crucified Christ, received by faith rather than granted by sign or syllogism, into the power of God and the wisdom of God to everyone called, both Jews and Greeks. The bench notes the crucifixion is not defended against either objection but simply preached, Paul trusting the cross to answer both audiences by what it does rather than by matching their expectations.

1 Corinthians 1:25

The verse states the letter's central paradox in its most compressed form, the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men, meaning God's apparent folly and weakness, the cross itself, outperforms every human alternative it is measured against. The bench reads this as rhetorical, not literal, since nothing in God is actually foolish or weak, the language borrowed from the world's own verdict on the cross to overturn that verdict on its own terms.

1 Corinthians 1:26-29

Paul turns from doctrine to the Corinthians' own membership roll as evidence, not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called, a congregation short on social credentials by design rather than accident. God has deliberately chosen the foolish, the weak, the base, the despised, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are, so that no flesh should glory in his presence, verse twenty-nine giving the reason behind the pattern. The bench notes the passage answers Corinth's status anxiety directly, since a church built this way has nothing to boast of before God except the calling itself.

1 Corinthians 1:30-31

Whatever standing the Corinthians lack by birth they receive of him, in Christ Jesus, who is made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, four gifts answering exactly what the world's wisdom, the law's demand, personal holiness, and slavery to sin each failed to supply. Verse thirty-one closes the chapter with Jeremiah 9:24, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord, the second citation of the it-is-written ledger and the direct answer to the boasting the chapter has been correcting since verse twelve. The bench reads Paul's chain of four words as covering the whole of salvation deliberately, from the sinner's standing before God to his final deliverance.
