The Prophecy Timeline
Messianic prophecy in the order it was spoken: from the patriarchs to the fall of Jerusalem. Each era carries the promises made inside it, in its own words, with the passage where the New Testament says it landed.

A Prophet Like Moses
“The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.”
“And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you... For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things.”
Moses promised God would raise up a prophet like himself — a deliverer, lawgiver, mediator, and intercessor.
Jesus parallels Moses in over 50 ways: both were threatened as infants, both spent time in Egypt, both fasted 40 days, both were lawgivers, mediators, deliverers, and intercessors. Peter explicitly identifies Jesus as this prophet in Acts 3.

A Star Announces His Birth
“There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel.”
“Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”
A star would signal the Messiah's birth.
The Star of Bethlehem guided the Magi to Jesus.
Astronomical theories include conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, a comet, or supernatural phenomenon.
His Birth & ComingBorn During Roman Rule

Born During Roman Rule
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah... until Shiloh come.”
“Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.”
The Messiah would come before Judah lost its judicial authority.
Jesus came while Rome ruled but before Judah fully lost self-governance.
The Sanhedrin lost capital punishment authority around 6-7 AD.
His Birth & ComingBorn of a Particular Woman
Fulfilled“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Born of a Particular Woman
“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.”
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman.”
The Messiah would be 'seed of the woman' - an unusual phrase pointing to virgin birth.
Jesus was born of Mary without human father.
His Birth & ComingBorn of a Woman
Fulfilled“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Born of a Woman
“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.”
The first messianic prophecy in Scripture. The 'seed of the woman' would crush the serpent's head while being wounded in the process — a picture of Christ's victory over Satan at the cross.
Jesus was born of Mary, a woman, without a human father. He defeated Satan through his death and resurrection.
Given immediately after the Fall, this is the protoevangelium - the first gospel promise.
The Hebrew 'seed of woman' is unusual; seed is typically attributed to the man. This hints at the virgin birth.
His Birth & ComingFrom the Tribe of Judah
Fulfilled“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
From the Tribe of Judah
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”
“Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda.”
Jacob's blessing narrowed the messianic line to the tribe of Judah. The sceptre (kingship) would remain with Judah until 'Shiloh' (the Messiah) came.
Jesus was of the tribe of Judah. Notably, the sceptre departed from Judah in approximately 6-7 AD when the Sanhedrin lost the power of capital punishment under Roman rule — just before Jesus' ministry began.
Jacob's blessing over his sons, establishing Judah as the royal tribe.
'Shiloh' is interpreted as 'he whose it is' or 'the peaceful one' - a messianic title.
His Birth & ComingSeed of Abraham
Fulfilled“And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Seed of Abraham
“And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.”
“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.”
God promised Abraham that through his singular 'seed' (descendant), all nations would be blessed.
Jesus was a descendant of Abraham through the line of Isaac and Jacob, as recorded in Matthew 1:1-2 and Luke 3:34.
Part of the Abrahamic covenant, establishing the line through which the Messiah would come.
His Birth & ComingSon of Isaac
Fulfilled“And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Son of Isaac
“And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.”
“Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham.”
The messianic line was narrowed from Abraham's sons to specifically through Isaac, not Ishmael.
Jesus descended through Isaac as recorded in both Matthean and Lucan genealogies.
His Birth & ComingSon of Jacob
Fulfilled“I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Son of Jacob
“I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel.”
“Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham.”
Balaam prophesied that a Star and Sceptre would arise from Jacob (Israel), further narrowing the messianic lineage.
Jesus descended through Jacob. The Star of Bethlehem appeared at his birth; he holds the sceptre of eternal kingship.
Balaam's oracle, spoken by a pagan prophet compelled by God.

1000 BC – 722 BC · 11 propheciesHis Birth & ComingA Priest Forever After Melchizedek
Fulfilled“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
A Priest Forever After Melchizedek
“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
“So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
The Messiah would be a priest — not from Aaron's line (Levi) but from the eternal order of Melchizedek, who was both king and priest.
Jesus, from the tribe of Judah (not Levi), serves as eternal high priest. The book of Hebrews (chapters 5-7) extensively develops how Jesus fulfills this Melchizedekian priesthood.
His Birth & ComingBorn King
Fulfilled“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Born King
“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”
“Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?”
The Messiah would be born a king, not made one.
The Magi recognized Jesus as born king; Pilate's sign declared 'King of the Jews.'
His Birth & ComingCalled Lord
Fulfilled“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Called Lord
“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
David called the Messiah 'my Lord' — the Messiah would be greater than David himself despite being his descendant.
Jesus quoted this psalm in Matthew 22:41-46 to demonstrate that the Messiah was not merely David's son but David's Lord — both human descendant and divine sovereign.
Jesus used this verse to confound the Pharisees about the Messiah's identity.
His Birth & ComingFirstborn of God
Fulfilled“Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Firstborn of God
“Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.”
“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”
The Messiah would be God's firstborn, preeminent over all.
Jesus holds the position of firstborn - supremacy and inheritance rights.
His Birth & ComingHis Zeal for God's House
Fulfilled“For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
His Zeal for God's House
“For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.”
“And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple... And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.”
The Messiah would burn with zeal for God's house.
Jesus cleansed the temple twice during his ministry — driving out money changers and merchants. His disciples explicitly connected this to Psalm 69:9.
His Birth & ComingKing on David's Throne
Fulfilled“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
King on David's Throne
“Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”
“And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
God declared he would install his anointed King on Zion's holy hill.
Jesus was acknowledged as King — ironically, even at his crucifixion when Pilate posted 'King of the Jews' above his head. His kingship is now spiritual and will be fully manifested at his return.
His Birth & ComingPresented with Gifts
Fulfilled“The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Presented with Gifts
“The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.”
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”
Kings and wise men would bring gifts to the Messiah.
The Magi brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the infant Jesus.
His Birth & ComingSon of God
Fulfilled“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Son of God
“I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”
“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The Messiah would be God's Son in a unique sense.
God the Father declared Jesus as His Son at his baptism and transfiguration.
His Birth & ComingTeacher of Parables
Fulfilled“I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Teacher of Parables
“I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old.”
“All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables.”
The Messiah would teach in parables, revealing hidden truths through stories.
Jesus' primary teaching method was parables. He told dozens of parables recorded in the Gospels, and Matthew explicitly connects this to the Psalm 78 prophecy.
His Birth & ComingWorshipped by Shepherds
Fulfilled“They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Worshipped by Shepherds
“They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him.”
“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field... And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.”
Humble people dwelling in fields would worship the Messiah.
Shepherds were the first to worship Jesus at his birth.
His Birth & ComingFlight to Egypt
Fulfilled“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Flight to Egypt
“When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.”
“When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.”
God called his Son out of Egypt, echoing Israel's exodus and establishing Jesus as the true Israel.
Joseph fled with Mary and Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod. After Herod's death, they returned, fulfilling the typological pattern.
Matthew sees Jesus as the true Israel, recapitulating Israel's history.
Israel Falls
722 BC – 586 BC · 19 propheciesHis Birth & ComingA Light to the Gentiles
Fulfilled“I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
A Light to the Gentiles
“I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.”
“For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad.”
The Messiah's mission would extend beyond Israel to all nations — he would be a light to the Gentile world.
Jesus commissioned his followers to make disciples of all nations. Paul and Barnabas explicitly cited this prophecy when turning to the Gentiles. Christianity became the largest faith on earth, fulfilling the 'ends of the earth' dimension.
His Birth & ComingA Stone of Stumbling
Fulfilled“And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
A Stone of Stumbling
“And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel.”
“And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient.”
The Messiah would be both a sanctuary for believers and a stumbling block for those who reject him.
Jesus divided Israel — some believed, many stumbled. Peter applies this prophecy directly to Jesus, and Paul echoes it in Romans 9:32-33.
His Birth & ComingAnointed by the Holy Spirit
Fulfilled“And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Anointed by the Holy Spirit
“And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.”
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.”
The sevenfold Spirit of God would rest upon the Messiah — wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, fear of the Lord.
At Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon him in visible form, and the Father's voice confirmed his identity. Jesus began his ministry 'full of the Holy Spirit' (Luke 4:1).
His Birth & ComingBorn in Bethlehem
Fulfilled“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Born in Bethlehem
“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.”
Micah specified the exact town of the Messiah's birth — Bethlehem Ephratah in Judah. The prophecy also hints at the Messiah's eternal pre-existence.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Joseph and Mary traveled there from Nazareth for the Roman census, fulfilling both the Bethlehem birth and the Nazareth upbringing prophecies simultaneously.
Bethlehem was David's hometown; the Roman census providentially brought Mary there.
This verse also affirms the Messiah's eternal pre-existence.
His Birth & ComingBorn of a Virgin
Fulfilled“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Born of a Virgin
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
“Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Isaiah prophesied that a virgin (Hebrew: almah) would conceive and bear a son called Immanuel, meaning 'God with us.'
Mary conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit while still a virgin, as recorded in Matthew 1 and Luke 1.
Given to King Ahaz during the Syro-Ephraimite crisis as a sign of God's faithfulness.
The Hebrew 'almah' means young woman of marriageable age; the LXX translated it as 'parthenos' (virgin).
His Birth & ComingBorn of the Line of David through Jesse
Fulfilled“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Born of the Line of David through Jesse
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”
“Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson.”
Isaiah specified the Messiah would come from the 'stump of Jesse' — David's father — indicating the royal line would be cut down but would sprout again.
By Jesus' time, the Davidic monarchy had been 'cut down' for centuries. Jesus came from this diminished line, a shoot from the stump, fulfilling the prophecy of restoration.
His Birth & ComingBranch of the Lord
Fulfilled“In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Branch of the Lord
“In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.”
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.”
The Messiah would be called the Branch of the Lord.
Jesus identified himself with this imagery of fruitfulness.
His Birth & ComingCalled a Nazarene
Fulfilled“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Called a Nazarene
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”
“And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.”
The Hebrew word 'netzer' (branch) in Isaiah 11:1 connects linguistically to Nazareth. The Messiah would be associated with this humble village.
Jesus grew up in Nazareth, a town so insignificant that Nathanael asked 'Can anything good come from Nazareth?' Yet the name itself echoes the prophetic 'Branch.'
Hebrew 'netzer' (branch) sounds like Nazareth; wordplay connecting humble origins with messianic title.
His Birth & ComingCalled Immanuel — God With Us
Fulfilled“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Called Immanuel — God With Us
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
The Messiah's name would signify God's presence dwelling among his people.
Jesus was literally God dwelling among humanity — 'the Word became flesh and dwelt among us' (John 1:14). Immanuel was fulfilled not as a given name but as a description of who Jesus is.
His Birth & ComingHeir to David's Throne
Partially Fulfilled“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.”

Heir to David's Throne
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.”
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever.”
The Messiah would sit on David's throne and reign forever.
Jesus is heir to David's throne; his eternal reign awaits full consummation.
His Birth & ComingHeir to the Throne of David

Heir to the Throne of David
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.”
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
The Messiah would sit on David's throne and reign forever. This narrows the line from the tribe of Judah to the specific family of David.
Jesus descended from David through both Joseph (legal lineage, Matthew 1) and Mary (blood lineage, Luke 3). The angel Gabriel confirmed the Davidic throne to Mary.
His Birth & ComingHis Pre-Existence
Fulfilled“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah... yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
His Pre-Existence
“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah... yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.”
The Messiah's origins are 'from everlasting' — he existed before his birth in Bethlehem.
John's Gospel declares Jesus existed from the beginning. Jesus himself said 'Before Abraham was, I AM' (John 8:58), claiming eternal pre-existence.
His Birth & ComingJoy at His Birth
Fulfilled“Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest.”

Joy at His Birth
“Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest.”
“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”
Great joy would accompany the Messiah's birth.
Angels announced 'great joy' at Jesus' birth.
His Birth & ComingMinistry in Galilee
Fulfilled“The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim... The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”

Ministry in Galilee
“The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim... The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”
“And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet.”
Isaiah prophesied that a great light would shine in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali — Galilee of the Gentiles.
Jesus based his ministry in Capernaum in Galilee, in the territories of Zebulun and Naphtali. Matthew explicitly notes the fulfillment.
His Birth & ComingMinistry of Miracles
Fulfilled“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Ministry of Miracles
“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing.”
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.”
Isaiah described the messianic age as one of miraculous healing — the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, the lame walking.
When John the Baptist sent messengers asking if Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus pointed to his miracles as the evidence — directly echoing Isaiah's prophecy.
His Birth & ComingPreceded by a Messenger
Fulfilled“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Preceded by a Messenger
“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
“In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias.”
A voice crying in the wilderness would prepare the way for the Lord's coming.
John the Baptist fulfilled this role, preaching repentance in the Judean wilderness and baptizing in the Jordan River. All four Gospels identify John as this prophesied forerunner.
His Birth & ComingLine of David
Fulfilled“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Line of David
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.”
“...which was the son of David.”
The Messiah would be a 'righteous Branch' from David's line.
Jesus descended from David through both Mary and Joseph.
His Birth & ComingPreceded by a Massacre of Infants
Fulfilled“Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Preceded by a Massacre of Infants
“Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”
“Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem... Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet.”
Great mourning would accompany the Messiah's birth.
Herod's slaughter of Bethlehem's infants fulfilled this prophecy.
Originally referenced the Babylonian exile; Matthew sees typological fulfillment.
His Birth & ComingThe Massacre of Innocents
Fulfilled“Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”

The Massacre of Innocents
“Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”
“Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem.”
Rachel's weeping foreshadowed the slaughter of children connected to the Messiah's birth.
Herod ordered the killing of all male children under two in Bethlehem, attempting to eliminate the newborn King of the Jews.

Time of Birth Foretold
“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks.”
“And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.”
Daniel's 70 weeks prophecy provided a precise timeline: 69 weeks (483 years) from the decree to restore Jerusalem to the appearing of Messiah the Prince.
Using the decree of Artaxerxes in 445 BC (Nehemiah 2:1-8) and calculating 483 prophetic years (360 days each), the timeline arrives at approximately 32 AD — the year of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
Given to Daniel during the Babylonian exile, providing a timeline for the Messiah.
Various calculations place fulfillment between 26-33 AD, aligning with Jesus' ministry.
His Birth & ComingEnter Jerusalem on a Donkey

Enter Jerusalem on a Donkey
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
“And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. And as he went, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God.”
The King would enter Jerusalem humbly, riding on a donkey — not a war horse.
Jesus arranged for a donkey on which no one had ever sat, rode it into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday while crowds shouted 'Hosanna.' This was a deliberate messianic claim understood by both supporters and opponents.
His Birth & ComingBorn Before Temple Destruction

Born Before Temple Destruction
