brought up one of her whelps
on Ezekiel 19:3-4
The first whelp learns to catch the prey and devour men, then is trapped and dragged in chains to Egypt, a fit matched to Jehoahaz. Gill and Clarke both read taken in their pit as the language of a beast hunt turned on the hunter.
This site's exposition
he was trapped in their pit
Hunters took lions alive with pits and nets, and verse 8 names both. Clarke reads the nations as Egypt's army, gathered from many peoples. Jeremiah 22:10-12 mourns the same king under the name Shallum, who would never see his land again.

The Church Fathers1 voice
(Chapter 19, verses 1 onwards) And you, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, and say: Why did your mother, a lioness, lie down among lions? In the midst of young lions she raised her cubs. And one of her cubs grew up, he became a lion and learned to catch prey and devour men. The nations heard about him and captured him in their own traps, and they brought him with chains to the land of Egypt.

The nations also heard of him,....
That kingdom and that house are here compared to a vine, and these princes to branches, which had been strong and flourishing, but were now broken off and burnt,
Thither Jehoahaz was carried captive, and never heard of more. (2.) The like sin and fall of his successor Jehoiakim. The kingdom of Judah for some time expected the return of Jehoahaz out of Egypt, but at length despaired of it, and then took another of the lion's whelps, and made him a young lion,

Chains - See the marginal rendering to Eze 19:9 and Isa 27:9, note. Eze 19:5 Another - Jehoiachin who soon showed himself no less unworthy than Jehoahaz. The “waiting” of the people was during the absence of their rightful lord Jehoahaz, a captive in Egypt while Jehoiakim, whom they deemed an usurper, was on the throne. It was not until Jehoiachin succeeded, that they seemed to themselves to have a monarch of their own 2Ki 24:6. Eze 19:7 Their desolate palaces - Rather, his palaces, built upon the ground, from where he had ejected the former owners. Eze 19:8 The nations - are here the Chaldaeans: see the marginal references.
