The surviving Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites are conscripted as forced laborers. The Israelites serve instead as “his men of war, his officers and captains, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry”. Kings gives the division in the same terms at 1 Kings 9:20-23.

Israelites filled the army and its command, and the forced labor fell on the Canaanite remnant. Clarke points to the parallel at 1 Kings 9:21. Israel still felt the weight of the reign, and at 10:4 the tribes ask Solomon's son to lighten it.
