The priests carry the ark beneath the wings of the cherubim. The account matches 1 Kings 8:6-8 down to the poles seen from in front of the inner sanctuary. Verse 10 narrows the contents to “the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb,” the covenant document alone.

Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets. Moses placed them there at Horeb, and the Chaldee paraphrase, quoted by Clarke, names them the second pair. The first pair was broken over the calf the people made, and the second bore the Ten Words.
