Those splendid insignia having been plundered by the Egyptian conqueror, others were made of inferior metal and kept in the guard room of the palace, to be ready for use; as, notwithstanding the tarnished glory of the court, the old state etiquette was kept up on public and solemn occasions.

So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem

on 2 Chronicles 12:9-11

Shishak seizes the treasures of the temple and the palace, “He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made”. Rehoboam makes “bronze shields in their place,” as 1 Kings 14:27-28 records. The gold of Solomon's glory is answered in bronze, and the text states the decline in objects.

The bronze shields were copies of the gold shields of Solomon that Shishak had just carried off. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown call them insignia of inferior metal, made so that state ceremony could go on. The captains kept them close.
