The same before mentioned, the firstborn of Obededom: Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, and Elzabad, whose brethren were strong men; Elihu and Semachiah; which may rather denote their valour and courage, as before, though strength of body was needful, particularly to open and shut the doors of the temple, which, Josephus (r) says, required the assistance of twenty men. Obed-edom is the man who housed the ark, and two generations later his line stands at the gates. Verse 5 gives the reason, “For God had blessed Obed-edom”. Matthew Henry and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown both trace this household to the blessing of 2 Samuel 6:11-12.

Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad were Shemaiah's sons, and Elihu and Semachiah were his brothers. John Gill notes that strength was needed at the gates. He cites Josephus, who says twenty men were required to open and shut the doors of the temple.
