on 1 Chronicles 26:9-11
Meshelemiah's house counts “18 in all”, a smaller family than Obed-edom's. Hosah the Merarite set Shimri first by his own choice as father, “although he was not the firstborn”. The law kept the double portion for the firstborn, while the gatekeeper's post was given for fitness.

Hilkiah, Tebaliah and Zechariah follow Shimri among the sons of Hosah. The house of Hosah the Merarite numbered 13 in all, the smallest of the three houses of gatekeepers. John Gill traces these Merarites to Merari, a brother of Kohath.
