Revelation 13:1-2

John sees a beast rise up out of the sea, seven heads and ten horns crowned, the names of blasphemy written on its heads, and combining in one creature the leopard, the bear, and the lion of Daniel 7's three earlier beasts, with the dragon giving it his own power, his seat, and great authority. The beast is the man of sin Paul names in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 and the little horn of Daniel 7:8, one figure described from three angles across two testaments. The sea, in the book's own symbolism, pictures the restless mass of nations and peoples out of which world power rises, the same sea stilled forever in 21:1. The dragon's gift of his power and seat makes the beast his chosen instrument, a counterfeit king ruling by a counterfeit authority the dragon has no right to give.

Revelation 13:3

One of the beast's heads appears wounded to death, and the deadly wound is healed, and the whole world wonders after the beast because of it, a counterfeit resurrection staged against the true one the book has already shown in the Lamb slain and living in 5:6. Readers hold different views of the wound: some take it as the beast's own apparent death and revival, others as a revived form of empire itself, a kingdom that seemed to die and rises again in a final form. Whatever the wound's precise referent, its effect is stated plainly, the world's wonder becomes worship in the very next verse, healing mistaken for divinity. The counterfeit is deliberate, the dragon and his beast staging a resurrection because the true resurrection is the one claim they cannot make for themselves.

Revelation 13:4

The world worships the dragon for giving the beast his power, and worships the beast itself, crying Who is like unto the beast, who is able to make war with him, a direct echo of Exodus 15:11's Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods, the highest praise of Israel's God turned into praise of his counterfeit. Worship of the dragon and the beast together forms an unholy pair that anticipates the full counterfeit trinity of this chapter, completed when the second beast appears in verse 11. The question's form, who is able to make war with him, treats the beast's apparent invincibility as itself grounds for worship, strength mistaken for divinity a second time in two verses. The whole world's worship stands against the small number who refuse it, named later in this same chapter as those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 13:5-6

The beast is given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and given power to continue forty and two months, the same period already named for the trampled holy city in 11:2 and the witnesses' sackcloth ministry in 11:3, one three-and-a-half-year clock running under several of the book's scenes. He opens his mouth to blaspheme God's name, his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven, the beast's given authority immediately turned against the very God who permitted it, echoing Daniel 7:25's little horn who shall speak great words against the most High. Every power the beast wields is given, never seized outright, the passive verb repeated four times across verses 5 through 7, marking a sovereignty still ultimately God's own even over this final rebellion. Forty-two months bounds the beast's blasphemy to a fixed and limited term, a tyranny with a clock running against it from the moment it starts.

Revelation 13:7

The beast is given power to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and given authority over every kindred, tongue, and nation, a global reach the beast has never held before this hour. Overcoming here is not the beast's true victory but a permitted trial, the same word nikao used throughout Revelation of the saints' own overcoming in 2:7 and 12:11, now applied for a season to their persecutor instead. The saints' apparent defeat under the beast's war does not overturn the promises already made to them in the seven letters, since 20:4 shows them reigning with Christ after this very tribulation ends. Universal authority over all kindreds and tongues and nations is otherwise reserved in Scripture for the Lamb alone, in Daniel 7:14 and Revelation 5:9, making the beast's grant here the last and largest of his many counterfeits.

Revelation 13:8

All that dwell upon the earth worship the beast, all whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, one description in the verse doing double duty over both the book and the Lamb. Read one way, the Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world, God's redemptive plan fixed in eternity before Eden's fall, matching 1 Peter 1:19-20's foreordained before the foundation of the world. Read the other way, using 17:8's nearly identical wording as the guide, it is the names that are written from the foundation of the world, the book of life itself as old as creation. Both readings are held by careful interpreters and both leave the same comfort standing, that the saints' security was never an afterthought.

Revelation 13:9-10

The call if any man have an ear, let him hear, repeated from each of the seven letters, breaks into the vision itself here, warning the reader that what follows demands the same attentive obedience as the letters to the churches. He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity, he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword states the law of just recompense that has already governed the witnesses' fire in 11:5 and will govern Babylon's fall in 18:6, the persecutor's own weapon turned back upon him in due time. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints names the appropriate response to a beast permitted to overcome them for a season, endurance and belief that the law of recompense will hold rather than armed resistance. The verse answers every reader tempted to think the beast's apparent victory in verse 7 is the last word.

Revelation 13:11

two horns like a lamb: A second beast rises, this one out of the earth rather than the sea, with two horns like a lamb but a voice that speaks as a dragon, an appearance of gentleness concealing the same source of authority as the first beast. This second beast is named the false prophet in 16:13, 19:20, and 20:10, completing a counterfeit trinity many teachers name outright, the dragon standing in for the Father, the sea beast for a counterfeit Christ, and this beast for a counterfeit spirit who directs worship toward the first rather than toward himself. Rising from the earth rather than the sea suggests a more settled, more familiar origin than the first beast's rise from the restless nations, a deceiver whose lamb-like appearance is precisely what makes him dangerous. His voice betrays what his horns conceal, the dragon's own speech coming from a figure got up to look harmless.

Revelation 13:12

The second beast exercises all the power of the first beast in his sight and causes the earth and its inhabitants to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed, his entire office directed at securing worship for another rather than for himself. This is the false prophet's defining work throughout the rest of the book, always pointing away from himself toward the beast he serves, a counterfeit of the Spirit's own office of glorifying Christ rather than himself in John 16:14. The healed wound named again here, the third mention in the chapter, keeps the counterfeit resurrection at the center of what the world is being made to worship. Delegated power exercised in another's sight and for another's glory is precisely the pattern the second beast corrupts, borrowing the shape of true spiritual ministry for an idolatrous end.

Revelation 13:13-14

The false prophet performs great wonders, even making fire come down from heaven in the sight of men, a deliberate echo of Elijah's fire in 1 Kings 18:38 and 2 Kings 1:10, the true prophet's sign counterfeited by the false one to deceive rather than to vindicate. By means of these miracles he deceives the earth's inhabitants, instructing them to make an image to the beast, the one who had the wound by a sword and yet lived, the healed wound now given a specific instrument, a sword, and a permanent monument in an idol built to it. Signs and wonders are shown here to prove nothing by themselves about their source, since the same category of miracle that marks the two witnesses as true in 11:5-6 marks the false prophet as false, the fruit and the direction of worship being the test rather than the power alone. The image to the beast answers Daniel 3's image Nebuchadnezzar set up, worship demanded of an idol by a world power under threat of death for refusal.

Revelation 13:15

The false prophet is given power to give life, or breath, to the image of the beast, so that the image can speak, and to enforce worship of it on pain of death for any who refuse. An image that speaks and commands worship is the last and boldest of the chapter's counterfeits, mimicking the living voice the true God alone gives in Genesis 2:7 and demanding for an idol the exclusive worship Scripture reserves for the Lord in Exodus 20:3-5. The threat of death for non-worship completes the picture of a persecuting world system where economic exclusion, named two verses later, and physical death both stand ready against any who will not bow. The chapter's counterfeits climb steadily, a wounded head healed, a beast worshipped, and now an idol given breath, each stage borrowing more of the true God's own prerogatives for an imitation that finally speaks.

Revelation 13:16-17

The false prophet causes all, small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in the right hand or in the forehead, a universal system reaching every class with no exceptions named. The purpose is economic exclusion, that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name, three ways of naming the same required identification. This mark answers the seal set on the foreheads of the 144,000 in 7:3 and 14:1, the beast's counterfeit mark opposed point for point to God's own seal on his sealed servants, the same forehead claimed by two rival kingdoms. The chapter names no mechanism for the mark and no modern technology is in the text, and the site's reading refuses to identify any current system, person, or device with what John saw, holding to the parking order against date-setting and modern mapping.

Revelation 13:18

Here is wisdom invites the reader to count, and the number is given as six hundred threescore and six, called the number of a man, using gematria, the ancient practice of assigning numeric value to letters, a method attested in both Hebrew and Greek writing well beyond Scripture. The number of a man is read two ways among careful interpreters, one taking it as a specific individual whose name will sum to 666 when the time comes, the other taking six as the number of man falling short of seven, the number of completeness, tripled for emphasis, a name that only ever nearly reaches divinity and always fails. The preterist line's most common candidate is Nero Caesar, whose name in Hebrew letters sums to 666 by one common transliteration, a reading with real historical interest but held here as reception history rather than the site's own conclusion. No living person or current figure is ever named against this verse, in keeping with the book's own caution and the site's standing refusal to set dates or map modern identities onto its numbers.
