Psalm 83

Psalms 83:1-2

The prayer opens with a triple plea against divine silence, keep not thou silence, hold not thy peace, be not still, addressed three ways to a God who has, from the speaker's vantage, gone quiet while danger gathers. Thine enemies make a tumult and they that hate thee have lifted up the head describes an active, rising threat rather than a settled grievance, hostility already in motion against the nation. The psalm names the enemies as God's own enemies before it names them as Israel's, framing the whole conflict as an attack on the Lord himself.

Psalms 83:3-4

The plot is stated in its own words, come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance, a plan not for territory or tribute but for the erasure of the people entirely. Against thy hidden ones names Israel as those God himself shelters, so the plot to destroy the nation is aimed, in the psalm's own logic, at what God has hidden and claimed for his own. Gill reads the verse as the clearest statement in the Psalter of intent to destroy a whole people, named for what it is.

Psalms 83:5-8

Ten confederate groups ring Israel's borders, Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagarenes, Gebal, Ammon and Amalek, the Philistines with Tyre, and Assyria joined in behind the children of Lot, Moab and Ammon's own ancestry. No single battle in the historical books names this exact coalition, so the commentators read the list either as a composite of Israel's standing enemies gathered under one poetic roof or, following the reading tied to 2 Chronicles 20, as the Moabite and Ammonite invasion under Jehoshaphat with allied raiders folded in. Selah closes the roll call, the psalm's own pause before it turns from naming the threat to praying against it.

Psalms 83:9-12

The prayer reaches back to two of Israel's sharpest deliverances for its pattern, the rout of Midian under Gideon, and Sisera and Jabin broken at the river Kishon in Deborah's day, with the four commanders Oreb, Zeeb, Zebah and Zalmunna named by name from Judges 7 and 8. They became as dung for the earth asks God to repeat a historical outcome, not to invent a new one, citing what already happened to enemies who took the same ground before. The stated goal of the present confederacy, let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession, gives the whole prayer its target, the defense of what belongs to God rather than personal vengeance.

Psalms 83:13-16

The images that follow, a wheel or whirling stubble before the wind, fire through a wood, flame across the mountains, ask that the enemy's own momentum undo them, driven and consumed rather than met force for force. The gracious rule that governs the whole book governs this passage without exception: the prayer is Scripture, spoken against a specific ancient confederacy bent on erasing Israel, and it is never read onto any people living now. Fill their faces with shame carries its purpose into the next verse: the desired end is not destruction for its own sake but that they may seek thy name, O Lord.

Psalms 83:17-18

The final plea repeats the opening shame language, confounded, troubled, put to shame, and let perish, the harshest word held to the very last line. The stated purpose closes the psalm, that men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth, one of the small number of places the King James renders the divine name in this form rather than as the Lord. Every imprecation in the psalm answers back to this single goal, God known by name as the most high over all the earth, which the older writers read as the true center of the psalm's anger.
