Psalm 54

Psalms 54:1-2

The Hebrew title, which this page's text does not show, sets the psalm in the moment the men of Ziph told Saul that David was hiding among them, the betrayal told at 1 Samuel 23:19 and repeated at 26:1. Save me by thy name and judge me by thy strength opens with the two grounds a hunted man has left when every human ally has failed him, the character of God and the justice of God. The double plea, save and judge, asks for rescue now and vindication after, not for vengeance taken by his own hand.

Psalms 54:3

Strangers here does not mean foreigners, since the Ziphites were David's own tribesmen, but a kinsman who sells out a kinsman for Saul's favor earns the stranger's name because he has broken the bond a stranger never held in the first place. Oppressors seek after my soul names hunted life rather than stolen goods, and they have not set God before them gives the root cause under the whole betrayal. Selah closes the verse, one of the Psalter's unexplained pauses, left for the reader to weigh rather than resolve.

Psalms 54:4-5

Behold turns the psalm from complaint to confidence in a single word, and the two names in the verse, God and the Lord, cover present help and present company together. Mine helper is a title David returns to often, and it is the ground under the request that follows, that the enemy's own evil be turned back on him, not a private cruelty but the ancient plea that a covenant God police the covenant he keeps. Cut them off in thy truth asks judgment to fall by God's own faithfulness rather than by the sufferer's temper.

Psalms 54:6-7

The vow answers the opening plea, a freewill offering promised before the danger has fully passed, and praise named beside it because thy name, it is good closes the circle the psalm opened at save me by thy name. Verse 7 speaks of the deliverance from the Ziphite betrayal as already accomplished, mine eye hath seen, the confidence of faith stated as settled fact rather than as hope still waiting. The psalm ends where it began, with the character of God, now proven rather than only invoked.
