Psalms 13:1-2

The psalm opens on four strokes of how long inside two verses, measuring the anguish in repetition rather than argument: forgotten, hidden, counseled alone, and watching an enemy exalted. Sorrow in my heart daily marks the complaint as prolonged rather than sudden, a grief already settled into the days rather than a single crisis. Spurgeon reads the fourfold cry as the plea of a man who has stopped expecting a quick answer and still will not stop asking.

Psalms 13:3-4

The complaint turns to petition, and lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death asks for the opposite of what darkened eyes signified in Hebrew idiom, the dimming that marks a dying man. Gill notes that the danger named is not only the psalmist's own but God's standing among his enemies, since mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him would read as the Lord's failure as much as the sufferer's. The prayer binds his safety to God's own honor rather than resting on his own merit.

Psalms 13:5-6

The turn arrives with no reported change in circumstance, only the word but set against four verses of complaint: trust chosen before deliverance is described, and the future rejoice and sing spoken while the enemy of verse 4 is still exalted. Henry marks this as the shape many laments in the book take, an ending in praise that outruns the facts on the ground, the same movement Job's honest complaint first licensed in the canon. He hath dealt bountifully with me closes the psalm in the perfect tense, gratitude for a mercy the psalm asked for rather than one it has yet seen fulfilled.
