Job's reply, and the summit of the book. 'How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?' Ten times they have reproached him. Brethren are far off, acquaintance estranged, his breath strange to his wife. 'My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth' (19:20). Have pity upon me, O ye my friends. He wishes his words graven with an iron pen in the rock for ever. And gets his wish: 'I know that my Redeemer liveth, and at last he will stand up upon the earth… without my flesh shall I see God' (19:25-26), read by the church toward the risen Christ.
