Job 12:1-3

And Job answered and said opens the reply to all three friends together, and no doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you is the book's sharpest irony, Job granting the friends exactly the authority their own speeches have claimed for themselves. Henry notes the sarcasm is deliberate, since Job goes on immediately to claim the understanding they have just denied him, I am not inferior to you. The question who knoweth not such things as these turns Zophar's transcendent doctrine of chapter 11 back on itself, since Job has heard nothing from the three friends he did not already know.

Job 12:4-6

I am as one mocked of his neighbour sets Job's own standing beside a plain fact the friends have refused to reckon with, that the just upright man is laughed to scorn while praying and being heard. The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure states in a few words the problem the friends' whole theology cannot answer, that the wicked are not always struck down. Barnes notes this complaint anticipates the fuller argument of chapter 21, where Job will press the same observation at far greater length against Zophar's doctrine of certain retribution.

Job 12:7-9

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee, and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee anticipates the whirlwind's own method, turning the reader toward creation itself as a witness before God ever speaks from it directly. Verse 9, who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this, is the one verse of the whole human debate to carry the covenant name, the Lord appearing nowhere else between chapters 3 and 37 except once more at 28:28. Delitzsch notes the name here sits inside a truth every party in the debate already holds, that all these works trace back to one hand, which is exactly the ground the friends will fail to build a right argument on.

Job 12:10-11

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind extends verse 9's claim to its widest possible reach, every life owned by the hand that made it. Doth not the ear try words, and the mouth taste his meat turns to Job's own faculty of judgment, an appeal to ordinary discernment as evidence he is capable of weighing the friends' speeches and finding them wanting. Gill reads the pairing as Job's claim that the same testing capacity that judges food judges argument, and by that standard the friends' words have failed the test.

Job 12:12-13

With the ancient is wisdom, and in length of days understanding concedes a proverb the friends have leaned on throughout, that age itself carries authority. With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding immediately caps the concession, moving the true seat of wisdom from human elders to God alone, so that the friends' appeal to their own years is answered rather than accepted. Henry notes the two verses together are Job's method through the whole speech, granting a partial truth before showing it belongs finally to God and not to the men claiming it.

Job 12:14-16

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again opens a survey of providence working through history by unmaking what stands, a building beyond repair once God has torn it down. He withholdeth the waters, and they dry up, also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth pairs drought and flood as two faces of the same governing hand. Delitzsch notes the deceived and the deceiver are his at verse 16 extends the claim even over deception itself, God's sovereignty reaching into human folly and not merely around it.

Job 12:17-19

He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools begins a list of every office human society trusts, brought low in turn. He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle pictures a king stripped of royal dress and bound like a captive, the same hand that crowned him. Henry notes princes and the mighty fall in the same verses, the survey naming no office too high to be reached, an argument built to answer the friends' confidence that God's government runs on a predictable ladder of reward.

Job 12:20-22

He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged continues the survey into the men a household or a city would rely on for counsel. He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty presses the same claim onto power itself, no rank exempt from the reversal. Gill notes he discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death at verse 22 pairs the humbling of the mighty with God's mastery over what is hidden, the same reach the whirlwind speeches will later put on display.

Job 12:23-25

He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them, he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again closes the survey on the largest scale it reaches, whole peoples rising and falling by the same hand that unseated counsellors and kings. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way pictures leadership itself stripped of direction. Barnes notes the final image, they grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man, answers the friends' confident order with a vision of providence that unsettles the very men who claim to understand it.
