"Comfort ye, comfort ye my people" opens the book's second movement: Jerusalem's warfare is accomplished, her iniquity pardoned. A voice cries, "Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of Jehovah", valleys exalted, mountains made low, the glory of Jehovah revealed to all flesh (40:3-5), the text all four Gospels apply to John the Baptist as forerunner of Jesus. All flesh is grass, but the word of God stands forever; Zion is told to herald "Behold, your God," who comes as a mighty one yet feeds his flock like a shepherd. A sustained argument from creation follows: he measures the waters in his hand and weighs mountains in scales; the nations are a drop of a bucket; idols are cast metal and chosen wood; he sits above the circle of the earth and calls the stars by name. Jacob's complaint is answered: they that wait for Jehovah renew their strength, mounting up with wings as eagles.
