Leviathan (the swift serpent, the crooked serpent, the monster in the sea), falls to Jehovah's hard, great, and strong sword "in that day." A second vineyard song answers chapter 5: Jehovah himself keeps and waters the vineyard night and day, declares "wrath is not in me," and invites even briers and thorns to make peace with him. In days to come Jacob takes root and Israel blossoms, filling the face of the world with fruit. Israel's exile is measured contention, not the slaughter dealt its smiters; Jacob's iniquity is forgiven when the altar stones are beaten to chalkstones and the Asherim rise no more. The fortified city sits deserted, pasture for calves. The chapter closes with Israel gathered one by one from the River to the brook of Egypt, a great trumpet calling the perishing from Assyria and the outcasts from Egypt to worship at Jerusalem.
