2 Thessalonians1chapter 1

2 Thessalonians 1:1-2

Paul writes with Silvanus and Timotheus, the same team that opened the first letter, to a church he addresses simply as the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, its identity fixed by union with both. Grace and peace stand together as Paul's regular pairing of the gospel's gift and the gospel's fruit, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ named as one source of both.

2 Thessalonians 1:3-4

The thanksgiving is owed rather than merely felt, we are bound to thank God always, because their faith groweth exceedingly and the charity of every one of them toward each other aboundeth, the very growth Paul had prayed for at the first letter's close now visible. He turns their progress into his own testimony, we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God, holding up their patience and faith under persecutions and tribulations as proof that grace outlasts pressure.

2 Thessalonians 1:5

Their endurance under suffering is itself evidence, a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, proof that God's verdict on them runs toward the kingdom rather than against it. That ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer reads suffering as the path into the kingdom rather than a sign of divine displeasure, the same logic Acts 14:22 states plainly, through much tribulation we must enter the kingdom of God.

2 Thessalonians 1:6-7

God's justice runs in two directions at once, it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you, and to you who are troubled rest with us, the same coming settling both accounts. That rest is dated to a single moment, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, apokalypsis, the unveiling that ends the present arrangement where the persecuted wait and the persecutors seem to prosper.

2 Thessalonians 1:8-9

The revelation arrives in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel, ignorance of God and disobedience to the gospel named as one offense, since the gospel is now the means by which God is known. The sentence, everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, is read by the church's main line as conscious, unending separation from God, and by a minority of readers, including some who hold conditional immortality, as destruction meaning the end of being; the exposition keeps the main line at full strength and names the minority reading with its holders.

2 Thessalonians 1:10

to be glorified in his saints: The same coming that punishes also crowns, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe, Christ's own glory reflected back to him out of the very people he redeemed. Paul folds the Thessalonians into that number directly, because our testimony among you was believed, their faith itself the proof that the promised day will do for them what it says, in that day standing as the letter's own answer to the anxiety the second chapter goes on to address.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

Paul turns the doctrine into a prayer, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power, asking God to complete in them what he has already begun. The goal is stated plainly, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, a mutual glory exchanged according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ, the same pairing of Father and Son that opened the letter now closing its first chapter.
