The Evidence Room · The Long Range

Fulfilled prophecy

Some of the Bible's boldest claims are about the future. Centuries later, we can go and look, and say plainly when the match is partial.

The Cyrus Cylinder

British Museum, London · Babylon, 1879

Cyrus of Persia, in his own words, returning deported peoples to their cities and rebuilding their sanctuaries — the policy Ezra 1 says reached Judah, recorded by the king who set it.

The exact reading

The cylinder never names Judah, Jerusalem, or the temple. It is a Babylonian foundation text; it establishes the policy, not the specific decree.

The Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaᵃ)

Shrine of the Book, Israel Museum, Jerusalem · Qumran Cave 1, 1947

The whole of Isaiah, a thousand years older than the oldest Hebrew Bible known before it — and Isaiah 53, the suffering servant, demonstrably in circulation long before Jesus of Nazareth.

The exact reading

It differs from the medieval text in spelling and in hundreds of small readings; none of them changes what chapter 53 says.

The questions this room answers

Did the prophets really predict the future?

Some prophecies are far weaker than apologetics websites admit. This page leads with the worst one and prints the verse that embarrasses it, and a small number survive every honest objection, which is why they need no inflated numbers.

THE CLAIM

A few prophecies survive every honest objection; the weak ones are named.
