4 notes on this verseFor God loves mercy and truth. Two things God loves, mercy and truth. If he were only merciful, he would provoke us all to sins: if he loved only truth, no one would have hope of repentance. For this reason he seeks two things, and tempers the one by the other. If you are a sinner, hear that God is merciful, and do not despair, and do penance. But if you are righteous, do not be negligent, because God is clement: since God is also just, and loves truth. The Lord will give grace and glory.

on Psalms 84:10-12
The comparison in verse 10 sets a single day against a thousand elsewhere, and the office named, a doorkeeper, is the lowest post in the temple's service, the very kind his own family the sons of Korah held at the gates (1 Chr 9:19); he would rather stand at the threshold of God's house than dwell inside the comfortable tents of the wicked. Verse 11 pairs sun and shield, warmth and light for the way with protection from what the way threatens, and adds grace now and glory to come, no good thing withheld from those who walk uprightly. The psalm closes where it began, on blessedness, but the blessing has moved from mere possession into trust itself, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

Grace signifies both the good-will of God towards us and the good work of God in us; glory signifies both the honour which he now puts upon us, in giving us the adoption of sons, and that which he has prepared for us in the inheritance of sons.
The Nineteenth Century1 voice
For the Lord God is a sun and shield. Pilgrims need both as the weather may be, for the cold would smite them were it not for the sun, and foes are apt to waylay the sacred caravan, and would haply destroy it if it were without a shield. Heavenly pilgrims are not left uncomforted or unprotected. The pilgrim nation found both sun and shield in that fiery cloudy pillar which was the symbol of Jehovah's presence, and the Christian still finds both light and shelter in the Lord his God.

For a sun and a shield שמש may be interpreted according to its apparent meaning, but Midrash Psalms interprets it as an expression of the points of the wall.
