6 notes on this verseThe frying-pan - מרחשת marchesheth, supposed to be the same with that called by the Arabs a ta-jen, a shallow earthen vessel like a frying-pan, used not only to fry in, but for other purposes.

Three ways of preparing it are given, and they are three ways of cooking at home: an oven, a griddle and a pan. The law bends to the utensil a household owns, as chapter 1 lets a man bring a bird in place of a bull.

The third form is cooked in a pan, which Adam Clarke identifies from the Hebrew marchesheth as a shallow earthen vessel for frying. Fine flour and oil are all the verse requires. With the oven, the griddle and the pan named, verse 8 turns to how each is brought.

This offering made by fire is here said to be of a sweet savour unto the Lord; and so are our spiritual offerings, which are made by the fire of holy love, particularly that of almsgiving, which is said to be an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God ( Phil. iv. 18 ), and with such sacrifices God is well pleased, Heb. xiii.
