Three ways of preparing it are given, and they are three ways of cooking at home: an oven, a griddle and a pan. The law bends to the utensil a household owns, as chapter 1 lets a man bring a bird in place of a bull.

The second form is baked on a griddle, which Adam Clarke describes as a flat iron plate over the fire. The dough is unleavened fine flour mixed with oil, as in the oven cakes of verse 4. Verse 6 breaks the bread into pieces before more oil is poured on.

This offering made by fire is here said to be of a sweet savour unto the Lord; and so are our spiritual offerings, which are made by the fire of holy love, particularly that of almsgiving, which is said to be an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God ( Phil. iv. 18 ), and with such sacrifices God is well pleased, Heb. xiii.
