on Jeremiah 47:1-3

Now he directs his prophecy against foreigners. He calls the inhabitants of Ashkelon, Gaza, Azotus, Gath and Ekron "foreigners." He says that the prediction took place before Pharaoh struck Gaza, and he likens the army of the Babylonians to a flooding river swollen by rain …

against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza

on Jeremiah 47:1-2

The heading dates the oracle to a Pharaoh's strike against Gaza, an event distinct from Nebuchadnezzar's later campaign against the Philistine coast and one the commentators associate variously with Necho or Hophra, named honestly as uncertain. Verse 2 pictures the invader as waters rising out of the north into an overflowing flood, the same flood image Egypt used of herself in 46:7-8 now turned into a literal army sweeping over the land and everyone in it.

The Puritans and the Awakening1 voice
The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines,.... As the former prophecies were against the Egyptians, the friends and allies of the Jews, in whom they trusted; this is against the Philistines, the near neighbours of the Jews, and their implacable enemies: the time of this prophecy was, before Pharaoh smote Gaza; one of the five cities of the Philistines, a very strong and fortified place, as its name signifies; See Gill on Act 8:
The Nineteenth Century2 voices
that Pharaoh - Pharaoh-Necho though defeated at Carchemish, was probably able to seize Gaza upon his retreat, when obviously the possession of so strong a fortress would be most useful to him to prevent the entrance of the victorious Chaldaeans into Egypt.

Pharaoh-necho probably smote Gaza on his return after defeating Josiah at Megiddo (2Ch 35:20) [GROTIUS]. Or, Pharaoh-hophra (Jer 37:5, 7) is intended: probably on his return from his fruitless attempt to save Jerusalem from the Chaldeans, he smote Gaza in order that his expedition might not be thought altogether in vain [CALVIN] (Am 1:6, 7).
