(Verse 2, 3) On that day, the Lord's shoot will be in splendor and glory, and the fruit of the earth will be exalted, and those who have been saved from Israel will rejoice. And it will be, everyone who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy, everyone who is recorded in life in Jerusalem.

The branch of the Lord names the first of several such branch texts across the book, and the older commentators divide over what branch means here: Delitzsch and Gill hear a messianic title standing parallel to the fruit of the earth in the same clause, while others read it as simply the land's produce restored after judgment, both readings held without a verdict. Whichever reading a commentator takes, the promise attaches to a named remnant, he that is left in Zion and remaineth in Jerusalem, called holy and written among the living, book-of-life language the New Testament will later use of its own citizens. The chapter turns in one verse from seven women scavenging a name to a people whose names are already recorded.

The branch of the Lord “the branch of Jehovah” - The Messiah of Jehovah, says the Chaldee. And Kimchi says, The Messiah, the Son of David. The branch is an appropriate title of the Messiah; and the fruit of the land means the great Person to spring from the house of Judah, and is only a parallel expression signifying the same; or perhaps the blessings consequent upon the redemption procured by him. Compare Isa 45:8 (note), where the same great event is set forth under similar images, and see the note there.
