alternating carved cherubim and palm trees
on Ezekiel 41:18-20
Carved cherubim and palm trees alternate on every wall, and each cherub has two faces, a man's and a young lion's. Solomon's temple carried the same pairing (1 Kings 6:29). A guardian creature beside a living tree recalls the Eden language this book used at chapter 28.
This site's exposition
the face of a young lion
Each carved cherub shows two faces, a man's and a young lion's, while the living creatures of chapter 1 had four (1:10). A carving on a flat wall shows two sides. The two faces look toward the palm trees on either hand, so the pattern repeats around the whole house.
The record, by era
The Church Fathers1 voice
(Verses 13 and following) And the house was measured in length a hundred cubits. And the separate building, and its walls, were also a hundred cubits in length. The width before the face of the house, and that which was separate against the East, was a hundred cubits. And the length of the building over against the face thereof, which was separated at the back, was also a hundred cubits. And there were chambers exceeding in height on either side a hundred cubits; and the inner temple, and the porches of the court.
The Puritans and the Awakening3 voices
Of the door - Or entrance out of the temple into the oracle. And the door - This door was six cubits broad, and an upright bar or post on which the leaves met, and which was of one cubit's breadth, make out seven cubits. Thereof - Of the holy of holies, which was an exact square.
So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side,....
These seem to represent the angels, who have more than the wisdom of a man and the courage of a lion; and in both they have an eye to the palms of victory and triumph which are set before them, and which they are sure of in all their conflicts with the powers of darkness. And in the assemblies of the saints angels are in a special manner present, 1 Cor. xi.
