Went he inward - Toward the holy of holies. It is not said, “he brought me in,” but “he went in,” because the holy of holies was not to be entered even by a priest like Ezekiel, but only by the high priest once a year. So the “angel” enters and announces: the measurements. The post of the door - On either side of the entrance was a pillar, the two together making up two cubits.

The guide measures the outer sanctuary, forty cubits by twenty, then goes into the inner sanctuary. His own words name the room: “This is the Most Holy Place”. Gill notes the slowness of the tour, so that the reader reaches the innermost room only after every approach has been counted.

Until now the guide has brought Ezekiel with him, but here he goes in alone. Albert Barnes explains: the Most Holy Place was closed to an ordinary priest and entered only by the high priest once a year (Leviticus 16). Ezekiel, a priest himself, waits at the door.
