Edom's crime widens from hostility to acquisitive claim, treating the fallen kingdoms of Israel and Judah as territory for the taking. The text answers the claim by naming God's prior stake in the land, “even though the LORD was there”. The boastful words are heard directly, “I heard it Myself”.

Devour is the word used of the wild beasts that fed on the scattered flock in 34:5 and 34:8. Edom speaks as one of those predators. The mountains it claimed are the mountains addressed in 36:1.
