From foreign enemies; for Solomon had no wars with any: so that there is neither adversary; or Satan, no internal enemy in his kingdom, as well as no external ones, Adonijah, Joab, and other ill-designing persons, being cut off: nor evil occurrent; nothing that rose up, and met him, to discourage or hinder the prosecution of the good work he had in view.

Solomon gives Hiram the reason 1 Chronicles 22:8 states in full, that David's wars and the blood he shed kept the building for his son, and sets it beside the promise Nathan carried at 2 Samuel 7:12-13, thy son whom I will set upon thy throne, he shall build an house unto my name. The rest on every side is itself Solomon's proof that the promised hour has come; a king who can say the wars are over is a king free to keep his father's unfulfilled vow. The phrase an house unto the name of the Lord, rather than simply unto the Lord, opens the naming theology the chapter after next will carry to its full statement.

The Hebrew word for adversary is satan, as Adam Clarke notes, the ordinary word for an opponent. John Gill reads the rest as peace at home as well as abroad, with Adonijah and Joab already cut off in chapter 2. Albert Barnes sets this peace against David's wars.
