Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)

Hadarezer--or, "Hadadezer" (2Sa 8:3), which was probably the original form of the name, was derived from Hadad, a Syrian deity. It seems to have become the official and hereditary title of the rulers of that kingdom.

Hadadezer rules Zobah and has marched out to set his power along the Euphrates River. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown take Hadadezer as the original form of the name, built on Hadad, a Syrian god. They think it became the standing title of Zobah's kings.
