Titus 2:1-2

Against the Cretan deceivers of chapter 1 stands one command, speak thou the things which become sound doctrine, hugiainouse, the Pastorals' figure of teaching that is healthy against teaching that is diseased. The curriculum begins with the aged men: sober, grave, temperate, and then sound in the three graces themselves, in faith, in charity, in patience. Doctrine in this letter always lands in character; the chapter is a household roster of what health looks like at each age.

Titus 2:3-5

The aged women are given both a bearing, as becometh holiness, and an office, kalodidaskalous, teachers of good things, the letter assigning them the formation of the young women in love of husbands and children, discretion, chastity, diligence at home, goodness. Titus is not told to teach the young women himself; the older women are the appointed teachers, a standing note in the church's evidence on women's teaching ministry. The stake is named at the end of the sentence, that the word of God be not blasphemed, the doctrine judged by the households that profess it.

Titus 2:6-8

The young men receive one word, sober minded, and then the teacher himself becomes the syllabus: in all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works, tupos, the stamp others are struck from, with uncorruptness, gravity, and sincerity in the teaching. Sound speech that cannot be condemned aims at the watching opposition, that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. The young pastor's life is the argument his critics cannot answer.

Titus 2:9-10

The servants' address regulates a standing institution as at Ephesus and Colosse: obedience, pleasing well, not answering again, not purloining, the last word naming the petty theft Roman masters assumed, but shewing all good fidelity. The crown of the section belongs to them: that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things, kosmeo, the jeweler's verb, the gospel set off by the fidelity of those the empire counted property. The lowest station in the household receives the highest sentence in the roster.

Titus 2:11-12

The reason for the whole roster arrives with For: the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared, epephane, dawned like light, to all men. Grace is then given a teacher's office, paideuousa, teaching us, the schooling word of Galatians 3 now worn by grace itself, and its curriculum is double, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, and living soberly, righteously, and godly, toward self, toward neighbor, toward God. The verse answers every charge that free grace loosens conduct; grace is precisely the thing that trains.

Titus 2:13

The trained life looks forward: looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. The Greek sets one article over both titles, and by the construction Granville Sharp catalogued, the great God and Saviour name one person, Jesus Christ, the verse standing with Romans 9:5 and John 1:1 among the direct ascriptions of deity to the Son; the older reading that divides the titles between the Father and the Son is named with its holders, and the grammar's weight is given honestly. The blessed hope is the appearing itself, and the letter joins the appearing-lovers of 2 Timothy 4:8.

Titus 2:14-15

Who gave himself for us is the ransom's own grammar, and its double purpose follows, redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, periousios, a people for his own possession, the segullah vocabulary of Exodus 19:5 extended to the church without erasing Israel's own election. The mark of the purchased people is appetite, zealous of good works, the letter's refrain. Verse 15 arms the young delegate with the full register, speak, exhort, rebuke with all authority, and let no man despise thee.
