Revelation 8:1-2

The seventh seal opens not on a scene but on silence, half an hour of it, heaven's whole chorus stopped at the very moment the last seal is broken. The main line reads the silence as awe before the judgments about to fall, the created order itself holding its breath, and some read it against the Hebrew liturgy's own moment of silent prayer before the priestly service began. The seven angels who stand before God then receive seven trumpets, the seal series ending by opening directly into the trumpet series rather than closing the book, the site's reading taking the sevens as broadly successive with intensification.

Revelation 8:3-5

Another angel stands at the golden altar with a censer, and much incense is given him to offer with the prayers of all saints, the smoke of both rising together before God, the same altar under which the martyrs' cry of 6:9-11 was heard and answered with patience. The angel then fills the censer with fire from that same altar and casts it into the earth, and voices, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake follow, the saints' own prayers becoming the fire that falls in judgment. Gill and Henry both read the pairing as literal, the church's prayers for the kingdom to come and evil to be judged are not lost words but stored intercession that God answers at his appointed hour.

Revelation 8:6-7

The seven angels prepare to sound, and the first trumpet brings hail and fire mingled with blood cast upon the earth, burning up a third of the trees and all the green grass, a judgment on vegetation drawn from Exodus 9's plague of hail and answering Joel 2's fire devouring the pastures. The third-part measure, repeated through the trumpet series, marks these as severe but partial judgments, warnings still short of the full and final wrath the vials will pour out, and the site's futurist reading takes them as literal disasters striking the created order rather than symbols requiring decoding.

Revelation 8:8-9

a great mountain burning with fire: The second trumpet casts what looks like a great burning mountain into the sea, turning a third of it to blood and killing a third of its creatures and destroying a third of the ships, a judgment recalling the Nile turned to blood at the first Exodus plague. As it were, twice repeated, signals John describing the appearance of something he has no other words for rather than naming a known object, and readers who press it toward a literal asteroid or a symbol for a falling empire both find holders, the text itself committing only to the effect described.

Revelation 8:10-11

The third trumpet drops a great burning star, named Wormwood, onto a third of the rivers and fountains, and the waters made bitter kill many men, the star's Hebrew-echoing name recalling the bitter judgment word of Jeremiah 9:15 and 23:15 against a faithless people. Gill takes the star as a real falling body corrupting real water, while others through church history have read Wormwood as a corrupting teacher or system poisoning the wells the church drinks from, both readings named and the text's own emphasis, that the water becomes literally undrinkable and men die of it, standing at the center.

Revelation 8:12-13

The fourth trumpet strikes the sun, moon, and stars themselves, a third of each darkened so that a third of the day and a third of the night go without light, the ninth Exodus plague of darkness echoed and intensified across the whole sky rather than one land. An eagle, some manuscripts read angel, flies through midheaven crying Woe, woe, woe to the earth's inhabiters because of the three trumpets still to sound, marking a clear escalation: the first four trumpets touch nature, and the last three, announced here before they fall, will touch men directly. The triple woe is the book's own structural hinge, dividing the milder plagues from the severer ones to come.
