Revelation 17:1-2

One of the seven angels of the vial judgments carries the seer to a fresh scene: the judgment of the great whore, Babylon's harlot system, whose sin is fornication with the kings of the earth and whose wine makes the nations of the earth drunk. This is spiritual adultery language borrowed from the prophets against Tyre and against Israel herself, now turned on a worldwide system of commerce, government and false religion bound together. The vision answers chapter 12's true woman, Israel clothed with the sun, with a false woman clothed in another's colors, and prepares directly for chapter 19's true bride.

Revelation 17:3-5

John is carried in the spirit into the wilderness and sees the woman seated on a scarlet beast full of names of blasphemy, with seven heads and ten horns, the same beast already introduced at 13:1. She is arrayed like a queen, purple and scarlet, gold and pearls, a golden cup in her hand, but the cup holds abominations and the filthiness of her fornication, luxury covering corruption. Her forehead carries a name, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS, a title the angel will explain rather than leave as a riddle; the seven-mountains reading points many toward Rome in John's own day, this site's futurist reading holds Babylon as the end-time world system Rome then only pictured, and the Reformers' identification of the woman with the papacy is named as their own historic reading, honored as history and not adopted here.

Revelation 17:6

The woman is drunk not with wine now but with blood, the blood of the saints and the martyrs of Jesus, and this is what fixes her guilt, not merely her luxury. John's own wonder, admiration in the old sense of astonishment, is itself a warning; a system this glittering can astonish even a seer before its true character is explained to him. The angel's coming explanation answers exactly this wonder, moving from spectacle to substance.

Revelation 17:7-8

The angel answers wonder with explanation, mystery here meaning a truth once hidden now unveiled rather than something insoluble. The beast is described in a riddle of tenses, was, and is not, and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and yet is, language that echoes and inverts the divine name of 1:4, him which is and which was and which is to come, a counterfeit eternity mimicking Christ's own resurrection appearance at 1:18. Those who marvel and follow the beast are named as those whose names were never written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, the same book that decides destiny at 20:15.

Revelation 17:9-10

The angel signals that the explanation calls for wisdom, the same appeal made over the number of the beast at 13:18, because symbol is now being read as history. Seven mountains is read with holders: the near-term reading points to Rome, built on seven hills, as the city that fit John's own day, while this site's futurist reading holds that Rome then pictured a system yet to come in fuller form. Five kings fallen, one now reigning, one not yet come names a real sequence of world power John's readers could track, without this exposition naming any modern nation or living person, the parking order this book has held since chapter 1.

Revelation 17:11

The beast is numbered an eighth king yet counted of the seven, a figure standing both within and beyond the sequence, the same last-days concentration of world power Daniel's fourth beast and its little horn anticipate. His end is fixed before it is described, he goeth into perdition, the same word used of Judas, son of perdition, in John 17:12, matching the man of sin of 2 Thessalonians 2:3.

Revelation 17:12-14

The ten horns are ten kings not yet reigning, matching Daniel 7:24's ten horns out of the fourth kingdom, and their reign is deliberately brief, one hour, a phrase this chapter uses three times for Babylon's collapse. Their one mind is to hand their power to the beast, a false unity answering the true unity Christ prays for his own in John 17:21. Yet this alliance makes war with the Lamb and loses outright: the Lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings, the very title John will see written on the Rider's own vesture at 19:16, and the overcomers who stand with him are called, and chosen, and faithful, the three words matching the promises to the seven churches.

Revelation 17:15-17

The waters of verse 1 are now explained, peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues, the whole reach of the harlot's influence, a phrase that elsewhere in this book names the redeemed out of every nation at 7:9 now turned to name her subjects instead. The horns that once served her turn on her, hate the whore, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire, judgment carried out by the very powers that had exalted her, a reversal several commentators read against Leviticus 21:9's burning for a priest's daughter turned harlot. The angel is careful to say this violence is not outside God's rule but inside it: God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, until the words of God shall be fulfilled, holding human treachery and divine sovereignty together without collapsing either.

Revelation 17:18

The angel closes the explanation where it opened, a woman, and now names her plainly, that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth, identifying the symbol with a real seat of power without this exposition fixing that seat to any nation living today, per the parking order. The chapter has moved in a single arc from spectacle, to explanation, to verdict, preparing directly for chapter 18's funeral dirge over the city just named.
