Psalm 72

Psalms 72:1-2

The Hebrew title, which the reader's text does not carry, reads A Psalm for Solomon, and the commentators divide on what for means: David's prayer for his son at the transfer of the throne, so many read it, or Solomon's own prayer, echoing his request for judgment at 1 Kings 3:9. Either way the first request sets the whole psalm's pattern, God's own judgments and righteousness sought for a human throne rather than assumed by it, asked for the king's son as much as the king.

Psalms 72:3-4

Peace is pictured as a harvest the very land yields once justice governs it, the mountains and the little hills bringing peace by righteousness rather than by conquest. The king's office is then defined by whom it serves: he shall judge the poor of the people, save the children of the needy, and break in pieces the oppressor, justice measured from the bottom of the social order rather than the top.

Psalms 72:5-7

The prayer's terms already outrun any single reign, fear as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations, language no earthly dynasty in fact fulfilled. The older writers take the excess as a signal that a king greater than Solomon stands behind the words, named as their reading, and the rain image, coming down like rain upon the mown grass, pictures a rule felt as quiet, unforced refreshment rather than force.

Psalms 72:8-9

from sea to sea: Dominion from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth again reaches past the borders Solomon's own kingdom actually held, which the commentators read as further evidence the psalm's true subject is larger than its immediate occasion, named as their reading. The submission that follows, the wilderness tribes bowing and enemies licking the dust, is the ancient world's own idiom for total surrender before a throne.

Psalms 72:10-11

kings of Tarshish: The distant kings of Tarshish and the isles, of Sheba and Seba, bring tribute rather than have it taken from them, and the psalm widens to all kings, all nations. Some later readers hear an echo of this section behind the gifts brought to the infant king at Matthew 2, a tradition named for what it is rather than a claim the psalm itself makes.

Psalms 72:12-14

The psalm now grounds the king's greatness not in conquest but in rescue, he shall deliver the needy when he crieth, the poor also, and him that hath no helper. Precious shall their blood be in his sight reverses the common practice of ancient kings, for whom the poor were expendable, and makes their worth the measure of his reign rather than an afterthought of it.

Psalms 72:15-17

The gold of Sheba, prayer made for him continually, and daily praise gather the psalm's tribute language into worship rather than mere wealth. His name shall endure for ever, continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him, all nations shall call him blessed, recalls the promise to Abraham that in his seed all nations of the earth would be blessed, an echo the older writers read forward to Christ, named as their reading.

Psalms 72:18-19

Blessed be the Lord God: The psalm closes not on the king but on the God who gave him, blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things, and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. This doxology is one of four such seams the Psalter carries, closing Book II as 41:13 closed Book I, a structural fact the brief verifies across all five books.

Psalms 72:20

This line is an editorial colophon marking the close of an early collection rather than a claim that no more Davidic psalms follow, since psalms bearing David's name appear again later in the book. The commentators read it as evidence the Psalter was gathered in stages before reaching its final five-book shape, a note on how the collection was made rather than on its content.
