Psalm 148

Psalms 148:1-6

The heavenly catalogue opens the psalm, angels and hosts, sun and moon, every star of light, then the heavens of heavens and the waters above the heavens, each rank of creation called to the same task. For he commanded, and they were created gives the reason, existence itself already an act of praise before any creature does anything else. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever, he hath made a decree which shall not pass adds permanence, the fixed order of the skies read as obedience rather than accident.

Psalms 148:7-10

The catalogue moves from heaven to earth and starts at its most unlikely worshipers, dragons and all deeps, the great sea creatures and the abyss itself named before fire, hail, snow and stormy wind fulfilling his word. Mountains and hills, fruitful trees and cedars, beasts and cattle, creeping things and flying fowl follow in order, every tier of the created world called by name rather than lumped together. Gill notes the deliberate range, from the largest untamed creature of the deep to the smallest creeping thing, so that nothing in creation is left without a place in the praise.

Psalms 148:11-13

Kings of the earth, and all people: The catalogue reaches humanity last and spares no rank, kings and all people, princes and judges, young men and maidens, old men and children, every station and every age named in turn. Let them praise the name of the Lord repeats the summons already given to sun, moon and stars, the same word asked of a king that was asked of a comet. For his name alone is excellent, his glory above the earth and heaven, gives the reason that closes the catalogue, one glory too large for either sphere to hold alone.

Psalms 148:14

After the whole created order has been summoned, the psalm narrows to one nation at the very end, the horn of his people exalted and the children of Israel named a people near unto him. Barnes reads the horn as strength and standing restored, the same image used elsewhere in the Psalter of a king's dignity. The cosmic choir closes on a single covenant people standing nearest the throne, and the psalm ends where it began, Praise ye the Lord.
