Proverbs 17:1-3

A dry morsel with quietness opens the chapter's better-than form, weighing peace above plenty against a house full of sacrifices kept noisy with strife. The wise servant who outranks a shameful son overturns the ordinary order of inheritance, a reversal the commentators read as merit standing above mere birth. The fining pot and the furnace test metal, but the Lord trieth the hearts, the same testing image the book sets over every human motive.

Proverbs 17:4-5

A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips names an appetite, not an accident: the ear that welcomes a lying tongue reveals the heart that owns it. Mocking the poor reaches past the poor man to his Maker, since poverty is providence's assignment rather than a verdict on worth, and gladness at another's calamity draws its own punishment. Gill reads the pairing as one proverb about contempt, aimed downward at the poor and outward at the fallen alike.

Proverbs 17:6-9

Grandchildren crown old men and fathers are the glory of their children, a mutual honour running down and up the generations that the bench reads as the family's own economy of praise. Excellent speech becometh not a fool, much less lying lips a prince, since eloquence and rank both raise the stakes of what a mouth is trusted to say. A gift shines like a precious stone to the man who has one, prospering wherever it turns, and covering a transgression seeketh love while repeating a matter separates the closest of friends, the chapter's first warning against the wound a rehearsed grievance opens.

Proverbs 17:10-13

A single reproof sinks deeper into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool, the chapter's plain measure of how differently correction lands on a willing and an unwilling heart. The evil man's rebellion earns a cruel messenger in return, and meeting a bear robbed of her whelps is named the safer encounter than a fool bent on his folly, a comparison the bench reads as deliberate exaggeration for the sake of the warning. Rewarding good with evil is answered in kind, evil never departing from that house.

Proverbs 17:14-16

Strife begins as water let out, a small breach that widens past control unless contention is left off before it is meddled with, the chapter's own image for how quarrels grow. Proverbs 17:17-19

Striking hands as surety for a neighbour is named a mark of a man void of understanding, the book's recurring caution against pledging what cannot be foreseen, and loving strife or building a high gate are both read as courting destruction. Bridges reads the surety warning as commercial prudence rather than a ban on kindness itself.

Proverbs 17:20-23

A froward heart finds no good and a perverse tongue falls into trouble, the inward condition producing the outward ruin the chapter keeps returning to. A fool's father grieves without joy, but a merry heart works like medicine while a broken spirit dries the bones, a physical image for what emotion does to the body that the commentators note anticipates later medical observation without claiming to be one. Taking a bribe out of the bosom to bend judgment closes the unit on the same corruption named at verse 15.

Proverbs 17:24-26

Wisdom sits in plain view before the man of understanding, while a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth, a contrast the bench reads as attention itself, not merely intelligence. A foolish son grieves his father and embitters the mother who bore him, and punishing the just or striking princes for equity is named flatly not good, an injustice the chapter refuses to soften with any qualifying clause.

Proverbs 17:27-28

The chapter closes where restraint began: he that hath knowledge spareth his words, and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit, the sparing of speech read by the bench as evidence of a cool and governed temper rather than mere silence. Even a fool, holding his peace, is counted wise, and shutting the lips earns him a reputation for understanding he has not earned, the book's dry closing observation that appearance and substance can be mistaken for each other.
