The whole chapter is leviathan, and every question is about who is master. 'Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord?' Will he make many supplications to thee, or speak soft words? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Lay thy hand upon him, remember the battle, and do so no more. If none dare stir him up, 'who then is he that can stand before me? Who hath first given unto me, that I should repay him?' (41:10-11), a line Paul takes up in Romans 11:35. Then the portrait: burning torches out of his mouth, breath that kindles coals. 'He is king over all the sons of pride.'
