Hosea 3:1

The command repeats the pattern of chapter 1, but now the parable is explained as it is given, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine. Whether the woman here is Gomer recovered from a fall into servitude or another woman standing for the same lesson is a question the commentators divide on, most of the older bench reading her as Gomer restored, since a fresh woman would blur the very continuity the sign depends on. Flagons of wine is more precisely raisin cakes in the Hebrew, ashishah, food tied to festival and fertility-cult worship rather than drink, a detail several commentators note without changing the verse's evident sense, love turned toward idols instead of the Lord.

Hosea 3:2

The price paid, fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley, is read by the commentators as together equaling roughly thirty shekels, the price of a slave under Exodus 21:32, so that Hosea buys back a woman who has fallen to something like bond-service for her own debts. The half-price in silver made up with barley, a poor man's payment, pictures redemption bought at cost and not without difficulty, the prophet paying to recover what was legally already his by marriage. The commentators read the purchase as the clearest acted picture in the book of grace buying back what unfaithfulness had forfeited.

Hosea 3:3

The terms set for the woman are a period of enforced fidelity and separation, thou shalt abide for me many days, thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man, matched by the prophet's own pledge, so will I also be for thee, a mutual bond rather than a one-sided sentence. The commentators read this waiting period as a picture of chastisement short of divorce, discipline meant to purify rather than to end a marriage the earlier chapters had already pictured as broken and then remade. The wife is neither restored to full standing at once nor cast off, held instead in a middle state the next two verses apply directly to the nation.

Hosea 3:4

The sign is applied outright, the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim, legitimate worship and its instruments withdrawn alongside the idolatrous image and household gods in the same list. The commentators read the pairing as deliberate, a period stripped of both true worship and false worship alike, neither temple nor idol available, which the historical bench applies to the long centuries of Israel's dispersion without a functioning throne or altar. The list names loss on every side rather than judgment falling only on the idolatry the earlier chapters condemned.

Hosea 3:5

The waiting period ends in return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, the two objects of the seeking named together, which the older commentators read as pointing past the historical David to great David's greater Son, the king of David's line the prophets elsewhere promise will reign forever. The critical bench more often reads David their king as the historical dynasty restored, a position the notes name alongside the messianic reading without settling between them. The chapter closes on shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days, reverence and goodness held together rather than fear standing alone, the same note the whole book strikes between judgment announced and mercy that outlasts it.
