Three visions and a showdown. Locusts consuming the latter growth: Amos intercedes, 'O Lord Jehovah, forgive… how shall Jacob stand? for he is small,' and it is stayed. Fire devouring the deep ('cease, I beseech thee') and it is stayed. Then the plumb-line, against which no prayer is offered: 'I will not again pass by them any more.' Amaziah, priest of Beth-el, reports Amos to the king and orders him home: 'O thou seer, go, flee thou away into the land of Judah… for it is the king's sanctuary.' Amos answers with his credentials: 'I was no prophet… but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore-trees.'
