2 Peter 2:1

Peter sets his warning beside history: false prophets troubled Israel of old, and false teachers, pseudodidaskaloi, will trouble the church the same way, smuggling in privily, pareisaxousin, damnable heresies rather than arguing them openly. Denying the Lord that bought them, agorasanta, names Christ's own purchase, and the phrase carries two readings held with their own holders, one taking a real redemption truly bought and then denied by apostates who forfeit what was theirs, another a purchase only professed, claimed in name but never truly received. Their own swift destruction follows their own bringing in of the heresy, judgment matched to the crime they invented.

2 Peter 2:2-3

Many shall follow their pernicious ways, and the church's public witness pays for it, the way of truth evil spoken of because the world judges the gospel by the conduct of false professors inside it. Covetousness drives the whole operation, feigned words, plastois logois, speech shaped and molded to fit the hearer rather than the truth, used to make merchandise of the flock, emporeuontai, the verb for a trader buying and selling goods, applied here to souls. Their judgment has already been pronounced and only waits, of a long time lingereth not and their damnation slumbereth not, judgment pictured as awake and already in motion rather than delayed.

2 Peter 2:4

The first proof that God does not spare sin in high places is angelic: he spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, tartaroo, the letter's one loan from Greek myth vocabulary, used simply for the place of confinement, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. The site's posture reads these with Jude 6 and 1 Peter 3:19-20 as the Genesis 6:1-4 incursion before the flood, the Watchers of the tradition Peter's readers knew, their transgression a boundary crossed rather than an ordinary fall; the reading that takes the angels as Satan's host fallen at creation, with no tie to Genesis 6, stands with its own holders. Either reading serves the verse's own argument, that no rank, however high, escapes the judgment these false teachers imagine they can outrun.

2 Peter 2:5

The flood is paired to the angels exactly as Genesis 6 itself pairs them, the old world spared not, judgment falling on the same corrupted generation the Watchers reading names. Noah is saved as the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, kerux, a herald, the same title this letter gives no other man, and his long years of building an ark nobody believed in stand as the pattern of a lone faithful voice inside a doomed world. The flood came upon the world of the ungodly, kosmos asebon, and Peter's whole argument is that the same God who did not spare that world will not spare this one either.

2 Peter 2:6-8

Sodom and Gomorrha are turned to ashes, tephrosas, reduced to cinder, and condemned with an overthrow, katastrophe, the word for a total ruin, set up as an ensample, hypodeigma, a specimen displayed for every ungodly generation after to read. Just Lot is named across these verses as delivered, vexed, and righteous, his soul worn down day by day by the filthy conversation of the wicked around him, a life he could not escape and would not join. The pairing matters for the letter's argument, that God judges the world and rescues the righteous inside it in the same act, exactly the pattern Noah's flood already set.

2 Peter 2:9

Verse 9 states the catalogue's whole point in one sentence: the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, peirasmon, trials, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. Noah and Lot are the proof already given, one delivered through the flood and one delivered out of the fire, and the present tense of the verb, oiden, knows, makes the skill a standing competence rather than a past achievement. The verse answers the false teachers' own confidence that judgment sleeps, that it does not sleep but is reserved, kept on schedule for the day appointed.

2 Peter 2:10-11

The reserved unjust of verse 9 are now drawn in particular, those who walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise government, kyriotetos, rightful authority, presumptuous, tolmetai, bold to the point of recklessness, and selfwilled, authadeis, pleasing no one but themselves. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignities, doxas, glories, the ranked beings of the unseen world, where angels, greater in strength and might, bring not a railing accusation against them before the Lord. The contrast lands hard: beings of real power exercise restraint before what they judge, and men of no power at all rail without a thought, the same restraint Jude 9 shows in Michael before the devil himself.

2 Peter 2:12-13

These men are natural brute beasts, aloga zoa, animals without reason, made to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil of what they do not understand and set to perish in their own corruption, phthora, the same rot working from the inside that eventually finishes them. Verse 13 turns from beast to blemish, receiving the reward of unrighteousness for counting it pleasure to riot in the day time, open shamelessness rather than vice kept to the dark, spots they are and blemishes, spiloi kai momoi, on the church's own feasts, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you. The picture is of predators inside the fold rather than wolves circling outside it, which is the letter's whole alarm.

2 Peter 2:14-16

Eyes full of adultery, moichalidos, and that cannot cease from sin, beguiling, deleazontes, baiting like a fisherman's hook, unstable souls, and an heart exercised, gegymnasmenen, literally trained like an athlete's, in covetous practices, the false teachers' whole discipline runs toward greed rather than godliness. They have forsaken the right way and gone astray following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, misthon adikias, a thread this letter shares with Jude 11 and Revelation 2:14, the same warning against ministry sold for reward run through three New Testament books. The dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness, paraphronian, of the prophet, an animal given a rational rebuke while the prophet himself, gifted with reason, refused to hear it.

2 Peter 2:17-19

Wells without water and clouds carried by a tempest name the same failure twice, promise without substance, a cistern that looks like it should hold something and a cloud that looks like it should bring rain, both offering nothing when tested, and the mist of darkness reserved for them for ever answers their own emptiness with an emptiness that never lifts. They speak great swelling words of vanity, hyperonka, bombastic and hollow, and allure through the lusts of the flesh those that were clean escaped, only just breaking free from a life of error, catching converts on their way out the door. While they promise them liberty, eleutherian, they are themselves the servants of corruption, douloi tes phthoras, the letter's own irony sharpest here, that the men selling freedom are slaves twice over, first to their own lusts and now to the ruin those lusts produce.

2 Peter 2:20-22

Escape through the knowledge, epignosei, of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ followed by entanglement and defeat leaves a man worse than before he ever heard the gospel, the latter end worse with them than the beginning, since light rejected hardens deeper than light never seen. It had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them, paradotheises, handed down to them as a trust, and the readings on whether the entangled were ever truly regenerate or only reformed stand with their own holders, the same question the security passages elsewhere in the letter raise. The closing proverbs seal it in two pictures from Proverbs 26:11 and common experience, the dog turned to his own vomit again and the sow that was washed returning to her wallowing in the mire, nature reasserting itself in a creature whose washing never changed what it was underneath.
