Truly the devil, like a devil, interprets concerning the Savior what is not concerning the Savior. For if the whole psalm is about the Savior, as you interpret it, O devil, then it is about him too what is said: I will protect him, because he has known my name. That is, I the Father will protect my Son. Let me interpret it, devil, as you understand it. Let us see whether the sense holds. I will protect him, because he has known my name: that is, I the Father my Son.

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him shifts the voice for the psalm's last verses from the singer's confession to God's own first person promise, answering the trust described across verses 1 through 13. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him, I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him, and honour him piles five first person verbs onto the one who calls, presence promised before rescue and honor after it. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation closes the psalm on the same span the previous psalm measured in threescore years and ten, life itself named as the gift and salvation as its crown.

Many think that to Christ, as Mediator, these promises do primarily belong ( Isa. xlix. 2 ), not because to him the devil applied one of these promises ( Matt. iv. 6 ), but because to him they are very applicable, and, coming through him, they are more sweet and sure to all believers.
(6.) That they shall have an eternal life in the other world. This crowns the blessedness: I will show him my salvation, show him the Messiah (so some); good old Simeon was then satisfied with long life when he could say, My eyes have seen thy salvation, nor was there any greater joy to the Old-Testament saints than to see Christ's day, though at a distance.

With long life will I satisfy him. The man described in this Psalm fills out the measure of his days, and whether he dies young or old he is quite satisfied with life, and is content to leave it. He shall rise from life's banquet as a man who has had enough, and would not have more even if he could. And shew him my salvation. The full sight of divine grace shall be his closing vision. He shall look from Amana and Lebanon.
