Commentary
6 notes on this verseIn the thirty and sixth year of the reign of Asa Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah,.... How this is to be reconciled with the reign of Baasha, which was but twenty four years, and was begun in the third of Asa, and therefore must have been dead nearly ten years before this year of Asa's reign; see Gill on 1Ki 15:17 where, and in the following verses, are the same things related as here, to the end of the sixth verse; the explanation of which the reader is referred to.
This site's exposition
the six and thirtieth year
Chronicles opens this parallel passage with a date that has troubled readers, since Baasha reigned only twenty four years from the division of the kingdom and by a strict count of Asa's own reign was already dead before his thirty sixth year. The bench generally reckons the number from the split of the two kingdoms rather than from Asa's own coronation, which removes the apparent conflict with the Baasha of 1 Kings 15 and 16. Baasha fortifies Ramah, a few miles north of Jerusalem, to seal the road and cut off movement and defection into Judah.
The record, by era
The Puritans and the Awakening1 voice
Of the reign - Or, of the kingdom of Asa, that is, of the kingdom of Judah, which was now Asa's kingdom; or from the time of the division of the two kingdoms.
The Nineteenth Century3 voices
The six and thirtieth year - After the division of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah; according to Usher. This opinion is followed in our margin; see the note on 1Ki 15:16, where this subject is farther considered. Concerning Baasha’s building of Ramah, see the note on 1Ki 15:17.

proposed
Baasha . . . built Ramah--that is, fortified it. The blessing of God which manifestly rested at this time on the kingdom of Judah, the signal victory of Asa, the freedom and purity of religious worship, and the fame of the late national covenant, were regarded with great interest throughout Israel, and attracted a constantly increasing number of emigrants to Judah.

This passage runs parallel with Kings (see the marginal reference).
How the passage was read
What the Jewish commentators add
In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha initiated a war. How could this be?
This section is reception history: how the passage was read and kept in the Jewish tradition. Where a reading parts from an essential of the Christian faith, the section says so at that point.
