Thus they who receive Christ as their lawgiver and judge, need not doubt of their interest in his intercession.

The Philistines march as soon as Israel gathers, and Israel answers with fear, where in chapter four the elders sent for the ark to force a victory and lost it. Here the people ask Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us”, and he offers a lamb and prays. Obedience without the ark does what presumption with it could not.

Matthew Henry pictured the Israelites gathered at Mizpah unarmed, there to fast and pray, while Adam Clarke held the assembly was armed. Their plea to keep crying out to the LORD rests on the promise Samuel made at verse 5. John Wesley saw them holding him to it.

Unprepared for resistance, they besought Samuel to supplicate the divine interposition to save them from their enemies. The prophet's prayers and sacrifice were answered by such a tremendous storm of thunder and lightning that the assailants, panic-struck, were disordered and fled.
Cease not to cry unto the Lord - They had strong confidence in the intercession of Samuel, because they knew he was a holy man of God.
